The issue
I believe everyone should be treated fairly and deserves EQUALITY!!!!!!
For those who don't know what ableism is: discrimination, or different treatment towards people with disabilities or favoring abled-body people. Unfortunately this is a topic a lot of people don't acknowledge (even though it affects so many members of the disabled community) and that needs to change!
The purpose of this petition is to spread awareness (words can be very powerful) and make change so feel free to share stories and support the cause 😊

So how can you contribute to stopping ableism?
- Don't make assumptions.
- Don't set your expectations until you know what they're capable of.
- Ask, don't tell. Ask what is best suited for the individual person's needs, don't assume what they need and don't need.
- Understand that everyone (including non-disabled people) have needs that should be catered to.
- Don't pity us, as the challenges often don't come from the disability in itself, but society not providing equal access.
- Don't base your judgment on the disability, we want to be seen as who we are as a person not 'That deaf kid' or 'That lady with autism'.
- Our opinions matter, so please take the time to listen and take us seriously.
I've experienced discrimination in the classroom repeatedly because of my disability. It's often something subtle, unnoticed by many, but so very loud and present to me. This isn't just my story; it's the narrative of countless others who face ableism every day—a pervasive issue that impacts us immensely.
Ableism, the discrimination and social prejudice against individuals with disabilities, is alarmingly common worldwide. In Australia alone, about one in ten people with a disability faced discrimination in 2022, illustrating the severity of the issue. In the United States, where 16% of the population, or 1.3 billion people, live with significant disabilities, ableism remains a crucial problem that demands urgent attention.
Education is a fundamental right, yet many students with disabilities are deprived of fair treatment and equal opportunities due to entrenched ableist attitudes. This discrimination creates barriers to learning, growth, and opportunity, impacting personal and academic development.
We must take action to eliminate ableism in educational environments to ensure all students receive the respect and support they deserve. Solutions include training educators on disability awareness, implementing inclusive teaching practices, strengthening anti-discrimination policies, and providing necessary accommodations and resources for students with disabilities.
Join me in demanding a proactive stance against ableism in education. Let’s create an inclusive learning environment that fosters diversity, equity, and respect for every student, regardless of their abilities. Sign this petition and help us make a change for disability rights and equality in education. Thank you for reading 😍
