End All Gerrymandering
The Issue
The 2026 midterms are fast approaching and this past year, many states had been passing maps that heavily favor one party. States include Texas (for the republicans), California (for the democrats), and Virginia (also for the democrats). Also Indiana Governor Mike Braun and President Trump tried to push for a map to favor the republicans in Indiana but the Indiana legislature defeated the plan. Drawing maps to benefit one party would make elections less competitive and possibly lower turnout as people may believe their vote would less likely count as the election would biased against their side. Ending gerrymandering would make every house election more competitive and more representative of the people.
Ways to help ban gerrymandering is to pass the redistricting reform act of 2025 and even passing an amendment stating that it is illegal. An amendment could make it seem more permanent, as the redistricting reform act could easily be labeled as unconstitutional by the supreme court by citing the 10th amendment. An amendment could make it where if it's challenged, harder for it to be repealed.
Gerrymandering based on political affiliation is a key reason why this petition is being created. I could also get behind banning based on several other factors as well to prevent any state from drawing maps to discriminate against any particular group of people and harder for states to get away from political gerrymandering by stating it's because of another factor instead of political affiliation. Those other factors could include race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, sex assigned at birth, sexuality, age, disability, religious views, diet, educational achievement (based on the highest level of education someone achieved, like high school or some college), and wealth. Could even throw in weight and height. Banning gerrymandering on all that could make the House more representative of all Americans, not biased against any group. Also could be helpful if we uncap the House as well. Uncapping the House could help curb gerrymandering but that might not be enough. We gotta pass an amendment to outlaw it completely.
