Permit Food Stamp Benefits To Be Used For The Purchase Of Hot Beverages In Winter Months
The Issue
As a person who has faced and is facing homelessness, I can personally attest to the chilling nights spent in a car where a warm cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate could make the difference between freezing and maintaining warmth. Not only can this small change provide a much-needed respite from the cold, but it can also deter individuals from resorting to alcohol or illicit substances as an alternate way to stave off the cold.
Moreover, it's important to recall that about 771,000 people in the United States are homeless on a single night, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Among them, many rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), often known as food stamps [EBT], to ensure their nutritional needs are met. As it stands, SNAP benefits can't be used to purchase hot foods or ready-to-eat meals, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This policy creates real difficulties for those with limited access to cooking facilities and for those looking for just a little warmth on a cold night.
For the health and wellbeing of all recipients, particularly those without a home, it is urgent that we permit hot coffee and other heated beverages to be purchased with SNAP [EBT] benefits during the winter months. By doing so, we can provide comfort, warmth, and potentially save lives, all while affording dignity to those most in need.
Although this might seem like just a small step to some, to others like myself, those living "On-The-Streets", those we have had their "Shelters" torn down or taken away from them, this is a "Giant" step in the right direction. Especially in areas were it's becoming "Illegal" to "BE" or "Help" Homeless people.
This will not only help those currently experiencing homelessness, but those who are on the verge of becoming homeless. As about 90% of Americans are just one Pay-Check away from becoming Homeless and could benefit equally.
Please sign, share this petition and stand with us in advocating for this critical and compassionate change. It costs you nothing, but a few moments of your time, and the rewards and potential lives it can and will have a positive impact are limitless.
Help let our current and future Homeless population know that "WE" CARE, we have the time to "Stand-Up" and let OUR voices be heard. It only takes One person, One voice to take the time to speak up and fight and create a Movement. They might try to silence a Voice, but they cannot silence a Movement
