Reverse Cumberland City Council's Ban on Same-Sex Parenting Books in Libraries

The issue

I am alarmed and deeply concerned by the recent decision of the Cumberland City Council to ban books on same-sex parenting from their local libraries. This act is not only an affront to freedom of information but also a dangerous move that undermines our democratic values.

Same-sex parents exist. Queer parents exist. By choosing to ban books for and about same-sex families, the council is effectively minimising their existence and sending a clear message - you don't or shouldn't exist. But they do.

This decision is not reflective of the Australian people nor the Australian spirit. Australia prides itself on its diversity and inclusivity, with 11% of gay men and 33% of lesbians having children (Australian Bureau of Statistics). Banning these books denies these families representation and fails to reflect our diverse society.

"Book burning" is dangerous; it hinders public access to open information which forms one of the pillars upon which our democracy stands firm. Books on same-sex parenting are not propaganda; they merely provide insight and education into different family structures that exist in our society.

I urge everyone who believes in equality, diversity, and freedom of information to join me in calling for this ban's reversal by signing this petition today. Let us remind Cumberland City Council that we stand for an inclusive society where all families are recognised, respected, and represented equally.
