Stop the Netflix–WBD Monopoly!
The Issue
📢 Introduction
We, the undersigned, call on regulators, lawmakers, and the public to oppose Netflix’s proposed $72–83 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). This merger threatens the future of entertainment, jobs, and consumer choice.
❌ Why This Merger Must Be Blocked
- Massive consolidation of power: Netflix, already the world’s largest streaming platform, would absorb Warner Bros.’ legendary film and TV studios, HBO, and HBO Max. This would give one company unprecedented control over what audiences can watch.
- Job losses and lower wages: The Writers Guild of America has warned that the deal would eliminate jobs, reduce wages, and worsen working conditions for entertainment workers.
- Higher prices for consumers: Fewer competitors means less incentive to keep subscription costs affordable. Consumers will pay more for less choice.
- Reduced diversity of content: Consolidation shrinks the marketplace of ideas. Beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Friends could be locked behind one corporate gatekeeper.
- Antitrust concerns: This merger is exactly what antitrust laws were designed to prevent. Allowing Netflix to swallow one of its biggest rivals undermines fair competition.
📺 What’s at Stake
- The future of creative diversity in Hollywood and beyond.
- The livelihoods of thousands of writers, actors, crew members, and entertainment workers.
- The ability of audiences worldwide to access a wide range of stories without corporate censorship or monopolistic control.
✊ Our Demand
We urge:
- The U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission to block this merger outright.
- The European Commission and other global regulators to impose strict antitrust remedies if the deal proceeds.
- Lawmakers, unions, and the public to stand together against unchecked corporate consolidation.
