Petition to Freemen of Newcastle and Newcastle City Council

    Transform the Town Moor

The Town Moor is the biggest green space in Newcastle. It is owned by Newcastle City Council but the Freemen of Newcastle own the grazing rights. While the Freemen claim the Town Moor is the ‘green lung’ of the city, many view it as a ‘green desert’ and are keen to see the land better managed to respond to the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis.  The Town Moor is designated as a Site of Local Conservation Importance and a wildlife corridor that supports red-listed birds, including skylarks and meadow pipits. Despite its importance for protected species, there is no management plan in place to balance the needs of wildlife, grazing and public access. The Freemen describe themselves as ‘a conservation body' responsible for 'protecting the Town Moors and green spaces for the benefit of the city’s residents’. But there is no evidence that the Town Moor is managed for anything other than cattle.  More trees and hedgerows on the Town Moor will reduce soil erosion and flooding, improve air quality, capture carbon and provide valuable wildlife habitat. Reducing mowing and avoiding pesticides will allow more wildflowers to grow on the Town Moor to support bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Ponds and swales would support frogs, toads and newts and reduce flood risk. Breeding bird enclosures on the Town Moor and a public information campaign will protect ground nesting birds, including skylarks, and minimise disturbance from people and dogs. More allotments on the Town Moor will support wildlife, improve physical and mental health and promote food security for the city’s residents.  All of these can be achieved without compromising the Freemen's grazing rights. Newcastle’s Town Moor has the potential to support a greener, more resilient Newcastle, helping the Council to meet tree planting, biodiversity and climate targets and provide learning opportunities. If you would like to see a proper management plan in place and see the Town Moor transformed for wildlife and people, please sign and share this petition.

    Transform the 'Easy' Eyesore

The garish 'Easy Group' signs on the Fulham Road, at the site where Daunt's bookshop used to be, are an eyesore on our beautiful neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the Council has no power to insist these signs be removed as they are covered by advertising regulations, and thus do not require planning permission. Beyond the signs, the area outside the 'Easy' stores looks drab and entirely unloved. It's dead space, and detracts from an otherwise lively, busy, and attractive area.  When Daunt Books was there, this was a much-loved part of the high street, and there's no reason it can't be again. This would be good for residents, and good for Easy Group as the landlord. We are therefore asking Easy Group to reconsider their use of this area. We ask them to amend the signage so that it's more in keeping with the area to bring life back to this part of the Fulham Road - we'd love another book shop, or a restaurant or cafe that people actually use! If you live or work near the Fulham Road - or just enjoy coming here - please consider signing this petition. The more people we get to sign it, the more likely Easy Group is to listen to us, and to understand how important this is to the local community.

Save Borneo's nature from Capital City plans: transform Jakarta instead.

Biodiversity, rainforests, indigenous people and the global climate are under severe threat. We must save the last remaining pristine forest lands on Earth. The Indonesian government has announced a decision to move the capital city functions from Jakarta to Borneo - East Kalimantan, one of the last remaining oases, already under threat from poachers, clashes between new settlers and indigenous people, growing forest clearing for palm oil production, and logging. The government states that no protected forest will be cleared – but only 18.9 % of all forests are ‚protected’. All forest areas are important indigeneous ares, fragile biodiversity havens and carbon stores. All become threatened by such an onslaught of capital, infrastructure and population.   The city is to grow from 20 to 2000 km2, supposedly by 2045. If the experiences of other enforced ‚New Capitals’ planned for distant, indigeous forest lands are any indication, massive semi-planned, informal and slum development is bound to encircle and extend the pristinely planned city, supplying it with the essential labour and services the elite planners usually forgot or could not allow for. In Brasilia even most government employees live in distant 'peri-urban' areas such as Ceilandia, the largest population centre, outside of the 'Ideal City'. These make up the real Brasilia. Here in East Kalimantan it means that any forest or indigeneous lands the formal city leaves untouched are bound to be destroyed by the inevitably less-than-ideal, unplanned, informal city.  The transport dimensions are equally disastrous: the new city – enforcing travel by housing essential government functions – entirely depends on highly polluting air and sea transport. Expanded palm oil, petroleum and coal production are to result - all disastrous to global climate, biodiversity and local populations. WE MUST PERSUADE THE PRIME MINISTER AND GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA to halt these plans and find other, sustainable solutions for modern, secure and safe government facilities, while regenerating Jakarta with renewable energy and water sensitive urban design - and the long needed transportation solutions. Also, there are many other means by which Jakarta and Java's existing urban networks could be used to accommodate a modern and sustainable national government infrastructure. Some reading can be found below. The second report, by Reuters, spells out or implied that with a different water infrastructure and less reliance on ground water pumping in Jakarta one of the putative main reason for the move - Jakarta is subsiding due to excessive ground water use (another is that traffic is choked) - may cease to exist. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/08/indonesia-capital-located-borneo-island-190826074218708.html https://www.reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-politics-capital/indonesia-pledges-40-billion-to-modernize-jakarta-ahead-of-new-capital-minister-idUSKCN1VJ0FE https://news.mongabay.com/2019/08/red-flags-as-indonesia-eyes-relocating-its-capital-city-to-borneo/  https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-36594-8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G51d63Ufgdk

For supermarkets to remove the Daily Mail & Mail on Sunday from their shelves

This petition is co-sponsored by: Sarah O'Connell - Stephanie Hirst - Jake Graf - Paris Lees - Fox Fisher - Kate O'Donnell The last few weeks have seen the Daily Mail group sink to new depths in their quest to sell papers and gain advertising revenue. They have embarked on a relentless campaign attacking one of the most vulnerable sectors of our society; transgender children and their families, and the charity Mermaids which exists to support them. The Daily Mail group have systematically sought to undermine and discredit the amazing work that Mermaids does by branding them 'bullies', while simultaneously making personal attacks on Susie Green, Its CEO. They have also sought to vilify mothers for supporting their transgender children while petitioning to eradicate any sort of representation of trans children within the media, under the guise that a CBBC online show featuring the story of a trans child is 'dangerous'. Much of this reporting has been based on the hearsay, social media gossip, and personal vendettas of individual people who are either transphobic, uneducated on trans issues, or with their own personal agenda. As a community, the Transgender, LGBT and society of decent minded people will no longer tolerate this sort of vitriol and hatred towards a small group of individuals who are being persecuted for their very existence, when all they want to do is live their lives in peace and happiness. We stand with Mermaids! We therefore demand that Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Co op and Waitrose remove The Daily Mail & The Mail on Sunday from their shelves. This is not to curtail free speech, but in the same way that as a society we do not accept racism, we will not tolerate hateful journalism which strives to flout equality legislation and guidelines. We wish to protect the vulnerable, the young generation, and the general public, from the negative influence of the Daily Mail Groups insidious and hate peddling reporting, by removing their papers from the public domain. For those who wish, The Mail can continue to be viewed online for free, but our public spaces must be free from hate. Please sign the petition & share on social media’ requesting directly to all the supermarket retailers named above that they publicly demonstrate their support for protecting the vulnerable, the young, and the morally decent, by removing these vile hate-filled rags from our public spaces.  Please also demonstrate your unhappiness to any business advertising within The Mail Group publications by publicly naming them on social media and requesting they remove their advertising from such hate-pedalling propaganda. #TransformNews #StandWithMermaids Finally, if you are able, please support the amazing Mermaids charity by donating on their fund-raising page, so they can continue their brilliant work supporting and protecting trans children and their families by donating on the Mermaids MyDonate Page
