For a number of years now websites have been needing to get consent from visitors to store or retrieve any information on a computer, smartphone or tablet in the UK.
This process could be as simple as clicking opt in or opt out or it can be as pain staking as clicking on link after link after link, taking you through pages of literature until you can;t even find the website you were previously at. Some websites force you to visit 3rd parties to opt out. Others give you easy toggles to turn off then sneakily colour the "confirm my choices" button grey and in a bright colour (usually red, blue or green) the button "Accept all".
Setting your preferences and choosing what is done with your information should not be a minefield. A lot of websites do it right where it's a simple black and white choice. But many just strive to make browsing the internet as awful as possible if you are not willing to adhere to their terms.
Some sort of legislation must be put in place to allow people to make a simple choice.Read more
