Statement on Violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Need to remove Vice-Chancellor

We are shocked and horrified to learn of the terrible attack on the Jawaharlal Nehru University on the evening on 5 January 202, by a group of armed goons who targeted a peaceful gathering of teachers and students. We note that this terrible event comes in the wake of a prolonged struggle by the students against a fee hike that would force nearly half of them to abandon their studies, and after an even longer series of protests by the faculty and students of JNU against the many arbitrary and illegal actions of the JNU Vice Chancellor over nearly three years. We are extremely concerned at the apparent failure of the Delhi Police (which is directly under the Home Ministry) to identify the perpetrators despite much photographic and video evidence, to register the complaints made by faculty and students about the attack, and the malicious attempt to pin the blame for the attack on some of the victims. It is clear to us that a Vice Chancellor who exposes his faculty and students to such terror and who is guilty of many other actions undermining the academic and other functioning of the University, cannot remain in office. As academics from universities across the world, we join those who demand that the JNU Vice Chancellor should be removes forthwith, as he has lost all national and international legitimacy. Make it compulsory by law for the Greyhound Board of Great Britain to publish detailed monthly injury statistics.

Where are all the injured greyhounds?Research undertaken by Greyt Exploitations found that at least 40,000 greyhounds have been injured in the past 10 years on British tracks. For more than 18,000 greyhounds - many less than 2 years old - it was to be their last race.At one track alone in 2013 - Romford - there were 428 injuries and 131 of those dogs have not raced since. The GBGB has attempted to conceal the extent of track injuries and what happens to inujred dogs but we believe the industry has a moral duty to be accountable and transparent regarding a dog’s fate once they’re deemed a financial liability.Where are all these injured greyhounds - what has happened to them? Greyhounds are sentient creatures - not disposable gambling chips and the public have a right to know. Include ethnicity in suicide statistics

Currently, age, gender, and geography are all recorded when somebody dies from suicide. This data means we are more aware of demographic trends able to better target support, resources and initiatives at these demographics. However, despite a larger than average proportion of people of colour and ethnic minorities being in some of the higher risk categories for suicide, there is no data available for the ethnicity of those who die by suicide. This means that we are unable to target culturally sensitive campaigns or interventions. The reason for this is that death certificates in England and Wales do not require someone's ethnicity to be included. We are calling on the government to urgently change this so that mental health services and suicide prevention groups like ours are better able to target our support to people of colour and ethnic minorities and to better understand the complex cultural relationships that underly the conversation around mental health in these communities.  This change will make a huge difference in our ability to ensure that our suicide prevention campaigns reach all communities.
