    Stop Separating Immigrant Families_Buddhist Statement

[PLEASE SEE THE UPDATE FOR AN ACTION YOU CAN TAKE JULY 20, 2019] As Buddhist leaders and practitioners, we unreservedly condemn the recently imposed policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the US-Mexican border. Over the past few weeks, thousands of children have been inhumanely taken from their parents by US Customs and Border Protection, in a policy that has been condemned by the United Nations and many international human rights observers. Indeed, no other country has a policy of separating families who intend to seek asylum. Whatever the legal status of those attempting to enter the US, separating children from their parents is a contravention of basic human rights. Parents seeking asylum make long, dangerous and arduous journeys in an attempt to find safety and well-being for their precious children. Ripping these vulnerable children from their parents is cruel, inhumane, and against the principles of compassion and mercy espoused by all religious traditions. From a Buddhist perspective, it is the close bond between parents and children that nurtures not only the physical well-being of children, but their psychological health and their moral formation.  Separating children from their parents and holding them in detention inflicts terrible and needless trauma and stress on young children that hampers and damages their development, causing long-term damage. This policy being employed on United States soil is morally unconscionable. That such egregious actions be employed as a deterrent for families seeking entry and/or asylum in the U.S. – using the sacred bond between innocent youth and their parents – is unjustifiable on any level. We suggest that our current defenders of this policy visit some of these border crossings and child detention centers so they can experience for themselves the present effects of their decisions. It is difficult to conceive that anyone having compassion for our world’s children and their families, and who witnesses such pain and anguish for themselves could continue to uphold such a practice. As people of faith and conscience, we feel that it is important that we speak out clearly in defense of basic human rights at this time, calling for an immediate end to this heartless practice. In doing so, we join the voices of many religious leaders and congregations that have unreservedly condemned this policy of separation. This policy is a serious violation of the rights of the child and must be stopped today. Signed: (Click here for a list of over 200 Buddhist leaders)

Support for the Public Health Professionals of China Combatting COVID-19

Following the events around the emergence of COVID-19 in China, international scientists have been dismayed by the spreading of rumors, misinformation and conspiracy theories on the virus’ origins. These rumors are now specifically targeting scientists and health professionals who have been working extremely hard to fight this outbreak and have shared data with unprecedented speed, openness, and transparency. Some of these scientists have already received threats of violence to their families and themselves. These rumors and conspiracy theories threaten to undermine the very global collaborations that are vital to combat this disease that has already spread across continents, and for that reason have been condemned by many, including repeatedly by the WHO Director-General, and the Director of The Wellcome Trust. A group of 27 public health scientists from 8 countries have signed an “open letter” in the Lancet to support scientists, public health and medical professionals of China fighting the outbreak of COVID-19 and to roundly condemn conspiracy theories surrounding it. These scientists include Sir Jeremy Farrar OBE, Jim Hughes (former Asst. Surgeon General, former Head of CDC NCID, Rear Admiral US Public Health Service Rtd.), Rita Colwell (former Head of the US National Science Foundation), multiple members of the US National Academy of Medicine, Prof. Sai Kit Lam (Member of Malaysian Academy of Medicine who co-discovered Nipah virus), John Mackenzie (Officer of the Order of Australia, member of WHO GOARN Steering Committee), Dr. Jerry Keusch (former Head of NIH Fogarty International Center), and other leaders in the field of infectious disease research and public health. Their goals in publishing this open letter are to reach as wide an audience as possible at this critical juncture of the COVID-19 outbreak, so that unfounded rumors may be quashed, and a message of encouragement and solidarity will be read by colleagues in China who are working hard to fight the outbreak as well as by the leaders at governmental agencies in China, USA, and around the world that might otherwise give credence to misinformation and conspiracy theories.   If you would like to add your name and support of the Scientists, Public Health and Medical Professionals of China Combating the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak, please sign below.

    Petition to Kamal Hassan

Condemning Kamal Hassan's statement on Thyagaraja - From Carnatic Musicians

To: Kamal Hassan This note is in reference to your recent interview with another artist from cine field in social media May 2020, where you have derogatorily mentioned about saint Sri Thyagaraja, whom the entire Carnatic music fraternity (with the exception of one or two) worships, for his divine and immense contribution to this art. We strongly condemn your reference to him ‘begging in praise of Lord Rama’. Every Carnatic musician, regardless of how they exhibit their affiliation to the outside world, deep within themselves know that they owe every bit of their basic livelihood nd professional success, to Sri Thyagaraja’s contribution to Carnatic music. In that regard, it is hard to find a parallel in any professional field as to how many thousands or millions of families’ incomes are generated owing to significant contributions of a single person to the field. The specific reference to Thygarajar and Lord Rama, also suggests the negatively pointed target on a specific religion/caste, which is indeed an insult to the followers of this faith: because we all know that in the past and present, there have been several saints and scholars from various religions who have earned a livelihood – cannot stoop to lows of mentioning that as ‘begging’ – in praise of Gods of the religions they belong to. Also, the Unchvrithi he did was owing to his Bhakthi, and not agendas outside of that. While no one can tarnish the image of a holy soul such as Thyagaraja, least of all by people who conveniently and selectively oppose certain faith-based ideologies, the remark on him is extremely hurtful to an entire section of the society, which perhaps, you may care least about. However, we artists from the Carnatic music fraternity strongly object to the pointed reference of a holy saint whom we all revere, and demand an apology for your malignant and despicable remarks against him carried out intentionally or otherwise.

Let the #AllianzArena shine in rainbow colors - send a signal to Hungary!

German | English | French | Spanish | Italian | 日本語 On June 15th, a law was passed in Hungary that will restrict the rights of minors by preventing them from learning about homosexuality and transsexuality. The proponents speak of "propagation", which has a negative impact on moral development and the formation of birth gender identity (dw). This is an attack on human rights and freedom of information. And all this in a country that is part of an alliance of states in which the values of the EU Convention on Human Rights are to be respected and protected. On Wednesday, the German men's national team will host the Hungarian national team in Munich. Now is the right time to set a sign against LGBTQIA+ hostility and let the Allianz Arena in Munich light up in rainbow colours! The arena already shone in rainbow colours once before, for Christopher Street Day 2016, so it's possible. According to the Allianz press release, this is possible thanks to a lighting system. I am part of the LGBTIQA+ community myself and the fact that Hungary is part of the EU means that the rest of the EU is not unaffected. UEFA and the Allianz (Alliance) talk a lot about diversity and respect. I call for action: Let the #AllianzArena shine in rainbow colors - send a signal to Hungary!

#AllianzArena in Regenbogenfarben leuchten lassen – Ungarn ein Zeichen senden!

French | German | English | Spanish | Italian | 日本語 Am 15. Es geht also.

    Becker College Closing Statement

Becker College Closing             We call on Becker College and the Board of Trustees to release a timeline in which they knew the possibility of suspending full operations. There is evidence that the school knew prior to bringing students back for the spring 2021 semester. Had students known of this possibility they may have been able to make more cost effective education plans as well as plans which correspond to their personal safety during the Covid-19 Pandemic.           This lack of communication impacts not only students but also their families. Had students known that  full operations of campus were unforeseen they likely would not have returned. Therefore, Becker College waited until students returned, and paid their bills for the full amount of tuition and room and board.             Opening campus this Spring required additional safety protocols translating to additional costs for the College. The students call for full transparency. Becker College pursued a route which goes against the educational pursuits of their students. The average student at Becker College has to take out 25% more per year in student loans than the average college graduate. With this in mind, the students at Becker College are now asking where has our money gone and how has it dissipated at such speed that some of us may be unable to finish our degrees at the college we selected.
