The government has allocated $48.7 million over four years to commemorate the 250th anniversary of James Cook’s first voyage to Australia. A gross amount of money to commemorate an event that most Australians are not particularly proud of and is harmful to many members of our community.
The package, detailed in the budget, will support events and exhibitions including a digital platform and educational material for the anniversary. If you believe this funding would be better used elsewhere like I do, then sign this petition to give that message to the government!
Part of the funding will be allocated to A multi-million dollar journey of the Endeavour to mark Captain James Cook's first voyage to Australia in 1770 and will “improve public understanding of the historical event” according to outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison, like we don’t all know what happened.
Mr Morrison initially referred to the voyage as a "re-enactment", but later clarified that he was only referring to the ship "retracing" Captain Cook's course along Australia's east coast. Someone should probably tell him that Cook did not actually circumnavigate Australia. Read more

Despite the NSW public calling for the banning of greyhound racing (which was successful and then disappointingly reinstated), the NSW government has now decided to spend $500,000 of taxpayer money to help fund the Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park in Sydney.
This is a shocking and appalling decision by the NSW government. Not only because it is waste of tax payers’ money which could be better spent on NSW farmer drought relief, hospitals, schools and infrastructure, but also because it is contributing towards a cruel and toxic form of gambling. “In just the last two weeks, there have been seven deaths and 91 injuries on racing tracks. People would be horrified to know that their tax dollars are propping this gambling industry, rife with animal cruelty.” - State Greens MP and animal welfare spokesperson, Mehreen Faruqi (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/jul/31/nsw-bankrolls-worlds-richest-greyhound-race-two-years-after-trying-to-ban-industry)

We still have massive poverty all over India. Income inequalities are not narrowing down, rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer.
On one hand thousands of our countrymen don't even get meals twice a day; on the other hand we can notice daily thousands of events & ceremonies are taking place all over India. In all these ceremonies we spend crores of rupees on erection of stages, sitting arrangements, lighting, flower garlands, decorations and sound system. Stop wasting Public Money!
Delhi is our Capital and Mumbai is Financial Capital therefore, I am expecting two young leaders, CM of these states to drive this initiative. Appeal your supporters to further drive this initiative. Stop accepting flower bouquet and garlands from followers, supporters & public. Hon. CM, Hon. PM & other Hon. ministers attend many public functions daily and we can save millions if we stop wasting money on such meaningless gestures.
I hope that countrymen will agree on this point that we should reduce meaningless expenditure on huge flower garlands which one can't even bear for more than 2 minutes. Hereby, I would like to appeal people to stop wasting money on presenting such flower bouquet and garlands to politicians or chief guests in ceremonies. Even if people won't present flower bouquet and garlands, the public representatives have to perform their duties. Stop wasting money! There are better ways of showing respect & loyalty towards your favourite leaders.
Now, 2019 General Elections are approaching and there will be political campaigns all over India and politicians will spend millions of rupees on these flower garlands. Election Commission should intervene and stop this nonsense!Read more

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned by the total irresponsibility and lack of transparency by Central Bucks School District school board majority who recklessly awarded a no-bid contract for legal services to a politically-connected lawyer from Philadelphia who charges $940 an hour and has already charged local taxpayers $114,000 for one month. We are additionally concerned that the School Board majority approved a $15,000 a month no-bid contract to a Philadelphia PR firm. Aside from the lack of transparency and failure to ask for public bids, this is a reckless and irresponsible waste of taxpayer money. We ask the school board to immediately take the following steps to safeguard our tax dollars and to publicly release all documents requested below:
- Cancel your contract with the politically-connected Philadelphia attorney earning $940/hour from taxpayer dollars - Provide evidence of the work received for his first month's payment of over $114,000. Please provide the public with invoices and deliverables. - Cancel the $15,000/month that goes to a Philadelphia PR firm without going out for bids. - Provide evidence of the work received for the Philadelphia PR firm's $15,000/month payments as well what justified their January payment for $30,000. Please provide the public with invoices and deliverables. - Cease from providing six-figure contracts to the politically connected without going out to bid or requiring a request for proposals. - Focus the use of taxpayer dollars on providing the children in our community with the best education possible.
Sincerely, Concerned Taxpayers of the Central Bucks School District Read more
To Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, Councilmember Dan Kalb, Councilmember Carroll Fife, Councilmember Janani Ramachandran, Councilmember Noel Gallo, Councilmember Kevin Jenkins, and Councilmember Treva Reid:
Oakland can and must become a safer city for all, and as you set the city’s Fiscal Year 2023-2025 Budget we, the undersigned, call upon you to invest in true public safety and divest from ineffectual and harmful outdated practices by redirecting $20 million in funds from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) to the Oakland Department of Transportation’s (OakDOT) Budget for reshaping our streets and sidewalks to be safer, calmer, accessible and more people-friendly. By shifting scarce public funding to OakDOT we can make our communities safer places to live, travel, work, and enjoy.
OakDOT, through its street, sidewalk, and travel lane improvements, makes our communities safer, improves public health, better connects Oaklanders and fights climate change. The department has done a remarkable job despite very limited resources. Doubling the department’s funding for physical changes to make our streets safer can help our city rein in traffic violence in a way that random police traffic stops and regressive fines cannot.
By making our communities safer and more enjoyable places to be and travel between- we help knit the social fabric together, attracting more people out onto our streets, making them livelier, safer and less prone to crime. Additionally, Oakland voters overwhelmingly supported Measure U, calling for reshaping our neighborhoods to, along with more affordable housing, have better sidewalks, calmer roads, protected mobility lanes, more greenspace and pedestrian plazas. A robust OakDOT is critical for implementing these public safety and mobility improvements. These are durable changes which additionally support the long-term budget health of our city.
Meanwhile, despite receiving the lion’s share of the budget for years, the Oakland Police Department is not keeping Oakland safer. If more funding to the Oakland Police Department was the solution to a safer city, it would have worked by now. Sporadic and unequal enforcement against dangerous driving after the fact simply cannot be as effective as preventing dangerous driving through physical street changes. Additionally, the department’s long and ongoing history of failings and abuses are enough to fill books, newspapers, and courtrooms. Simply put-- it is the wrong “solution” to our city’s public safety issues.
The Oakland City budget is a document that shows what our city truly cares about, it is a statement about our morality and values. Oaklanders deserve a safer city. Decades of experience have taught us that directing more resources to OPD is not the way forward. We call upon you to fund true public safety by directing funds away from OPD and into OakDOT.
Sincerely,
Traffic Violence Rapid Response and the undersigned:Read more
