Petition to Rt Hon Jacinda Adern, Hon Kris Faafoi

An open letter: Healthcare workers calling for reopening of EOI selections for SMC

Dear  Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern  Hon Kris Faafoi I am writing to you on behalf of migrant Doctors and Nurses in New Zealand and their frustrated colleagues, with regards to Immigration New Zealand's current policy of suspending selection of Expression of Interest (EOI) for Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa. The current suspension of EOIs has led to immense uncertainty amongst Healthcare workers, and we are concerned that with no clear pathway to residency, many migrant Doctors and Nurses will be forced to leave New Zealand as they see no future prospects here.  Most Healthcare professionals who have submitted EOIs have been here for several months if not years, and have been working throughout the pandemic, as part of the team of 5 million. Throughout this time, we have been unable to see our families due to concerns we would be unable to return to New Zealand, should we have to leave. A situation that many migrants find themselves in. This is an issue that would be mitigated by being a Resident. As Non-Residents, we are unable to buy a home, contribute to Kiwi Saver or plan for a family. We are unable to progress with our careers, with many training pathways only open to Permanent Residents or Citizens. We are aware there are at least 235 doctors and 901 nurses in the EOI pool, both of which New Zealand are desperately short of. We fear that if no changes are made to the EOI closure, then it will be too late for hundreds of healthcare workers and many will have made plans for their departure. We have already seen colleagues of ours leave New Zealand, in part, due to a lack of prospects and certainty. We worry of the negative impact a departure of hundreds of nurses and doctors will have on New Zealand's healthcare system, with fewer staff leading to even further staff shortages, longer wait times, departmental pressures and poorer outcomes for our patients. We are grateful to be here in New Zealand, and are all eager to stay. However the current suspension of EOIs is causing a huge amount of stress and anxiety, given our lives are currently in limbo. We worry that if the EOI queue does not reopen many of us will have to leave New Zealand. This seems senseless, given that New Zealand has a desperate shortage of Doctors and Nurses, and that we are already here, willing, ready and able to work. We implore you to consider this and plan for the reopening of EOIs in the near future, or at least grant us with a timeframe that we can plan to. Without this we fear there will be an impending exodus of essential healthcare staff from New Zealand, which inevitably will have a negative impact on the healthcare system. Kind regards.

Edmonton Football club Name selections suck. Let’s get new choices

The new choices for the club name are all less than desirable. And Edmonton deserves better from this selection process.

Petition to Trina Schmidt, Tim McCallum, Robert Stokes, Eleebana Public School Community

Hold Dept. of Education accountable for promises made during the EPS Principal selections

The Eleebana Public School Principal selection process began in May 2018 and ran for over 6 months. During this lengthy period of time the selection panel had three iterations with no less than 6 various staff and parent representatives involved. The long delays and the need for 3 different replacement panels was largely due to numerous concerns felt by panel members about the transparency in decision making by the Dept. of Education. Over the last 4 months behind the scenes, members of the parent community have been calling for the Department of Education to conduct an open and unbiased recruitment process. Did you know the Department of Education promised they would restart the recruitment process in September, but failed to honour this promise? Did you know that staff and P&C panel members were meant to have an equal voice in decision making? This certainly wasn’t the case. Did you know Dr Leonard was not even afforded an interview?Did you know only 1 person total was interviewed for the position? Recently, the P&C moved a unanimous motion for a dedicated group of community members to explore all avenues to appeal the process and  lobby the Department of Education to deliver on promises made. Representatives of the EPS community have continualy tried to follow the formal and appropriate channels in order to have their concerns resolved by the Department of Education. They in turn, have repeatedly ignored our requests to meet, and their replies continue to fail to adequately address our concerns.  The Principal Merit Selection procedure needs to be transparent and unbiased. The candidate that best matches the NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL should be selected. There is a genuine loss of faith by the EPS community that the Department of Education has not treated this matter with integrity and transparency. Leadership of EPS into the future ought to be STABLE, committed and harmonious. Please show your support by signing and sharing this petition as we continue to fight against a biased selection process. Let's end the year with a fantastic show of community support.

Petition to Portland City Council, Multnomah County JOHS office

Hazelwood NA demands transparency and equity for Safe Rest Villages site selections!

Hazelwood Neighborhood Association challenges the fairness and the competency of the Safe Rest Villages site vetting process.  We also challenge the selection of the Hazelwood site and assert that the city did not apply an equity lens when making their Hazelwood selection.  When Portland Commissioner Dan Ryan launched his campaign for 20 Safe Rest Villages he publicly committed to an equitable and open process.  This did not happen and we no longer have confidence in the city‘s ability to deliver on the initial promise of the Safe Rest Village Concept in an equitable fashion. Lack of Transparency  The initial release of surplus city property/possible sites was followed by months of silence right up to surprise announcement on 10/4/2021.  There was no outreach to any of the three preliminary sites selected. Hazelwood Neighborhood Association specifically requested a meeting with Ryan’s office on 9/21/2021, two weeks prior to the announcement which was ignored.  Even after the announcement – despite repeated public assurances that he would work with communities chosen for a Safe Rest Village, Ryan has agreed only to a closed meeting with HNA Board members, effectively excluding the rest of the community from any direct engagement with his office, including homeless residents.  Vetting, staffing and funding – it would appear there’s been very little due diligence throughout the process.  Instead the commissioner made an announcement without staffing and funding in place and without thoroughly vetting the potential locations... Examples cited below: One of the sites originally selected has already been removed because it’s in a flood plain.  This is information can be found by anyone on Portland Maps. The Park and Ride site at 122nd Ave was selected despite the site is located next to an existing homeless facility and less than a ¼ of mile from another facility. The Park and Ride site at 122nd Ave was selected despite that particular corner being arguably one of the most dangerous locations in the city.  There is nightly gunfire and frequent car violence.  In the past year there have been four homicides at the  corner and multiple vehicular related accidents and injuriesRyan has admitted that the city has not secured operators or staffing for the any of the shelters. Multnomah County Chair Kafoury announced in the press the county will not fund these villages past 2024, and it appears that the county has not pledged specific funding for behavioral health teams to work at the safe rest villages, but instead is encouraging the city to work within existing county funding to use those services at the villages.  Equity It is inherently unfair to site another shelter in Hazelwood, which is already home to two homeless facilities with a third facility less than a ¼ mile down the street in the Mill Park Neighborhood, when there are 72 neighborhoods currently without a shelter.Adding this site means 410 homeless individuals would be living in close proximity within an eight block area reeling from store closures in a neighborhood already stretched thin for resources. It defies logic that cities officials would consider it fair or equitable to locate three shelters in one of the most resource-challenged, diverse, high density neighborhoods in the city while exempting huge swaths of single family residential neighborhoods in closer proximity to better economic opportunities and amenities. This selection perpetuates the socio-economic segregation, fueled by city policies that have turned downtown into a playground for the rich and made close-in neighborhoods inaccessible to the working class and working poor residents of Portland. It’s a continuation of the same city practices implemented in 2016 that successfully shifted the majority of homeless services and shelter beds out of downtown - pushing vulnerable populations to the outskirts of the city. Therefore we can only conclude Hazelwood was selected because it seemed likely to lack the resources to challenge city officials and it was politically expedient. Hazelwood NA will not support the Park and Ride site selection at 122nd Ave.  We refuse to take part in the city’s overt and ongoing attempts to migrate homeless residents further from the city core and further out of sight.  This is a city-wide problem and therefore solutions to house people living on the streets should be applied equally across the city.  We’re asking residents of Hazelwood to sign this petition and submit comments and questions for Commissioner Ryan.

Petition to The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA)

Petition for NCA to expand August exam selections to accommodate future Articling students

As NCA candidates, we completely respect and understand the decision to cancel the upcoming May NCA examinations in an effort to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Public health is of the utmost importance.  However, the solution of making the electives that would have been taken in May available only in October is detrimental to almost all students.  By simply rescheduling the exams to August and October, without adjusting the existing exam offerings, the NCA has adversely affected the legal journey of many candidates.  Numerous students have applied to the Law Society and have secured articling positions based on the timeline that was at hand before the current situation. Others are delayed from pursuing potential employment due to a now significant delay in exam availability and completion. Some NCA candidates are financially vulnerable and under current economic stressors caused by the pandemic, easing barriers to employment should be of significant importance to the NCA.  We believe the NCA has taken minimal effort to accommodate the needs of the NCA candidates. We duly request that ALL courses be offered in August, and consider expanding the dates into the weekend or following week to avoid scheduling conflicts. In the event that the COVID-19 no longer requires stringent measures by May, we ask that the NCA strongly consider offering the May exams on a “special circumstance” schedule in June or July. It is unfair to those who would have likely completed their NCA requirements in May to be placed in limbo for an additional seven months.  We acknowledge that this is an unprecedented situation, with extremely difficult and variable challenges for everyone. We also reiterate our sincere concern for the health and safety, both physical and emotional, for society at large. Every business, organization, and individual is forced to make concessions during this time, and we ask that the NCA act accordingly to this request.

Petition to U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Peter A. DeFazio, Richard Anderson, Peter Wilander

Tell Amtrak and Congress We Want Dining Car Service To Remain On All Long Distance Trains.

By an Act of Congress under H.R. Bill 749 the Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act of 2015, and passing Federal Code 49 USC Ch. 24321 Amtrak Food and Beverage Reform, which stipulated that Amtrak must at least break even on food and beverage service during FY2020. Although Congress did not say how to accomplish this, AMTRAK management headed by Mr. Richard Anderson, CEO and President of Amtrak eliminated the traditional dining car service on long distance trains east of the Mississippi River, except for the Auto Train on October 01, 2019. Those trains affected are the Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Crescent, and Silver Meteor. Traditional dining car service on two other east coast trains was cut last year. The traditional dining service will remain for now on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, Texas Eagle, as well as the Auto Train between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida. Although it is the consensus of various sources that "Contemporary Dining" will be instituted nationwide, perhaps except for the Acela and the Northeast Corridor. The reason for this move is to cut costs by eliminating the dining car staff and the traditional dining car meals and replacing it with "Contemporary Dining" and a new Enhanced Flexible Dining menu, yet still offer complimentary food and beverages to sleeping car passengers according to Amtrak. They also unjustly put the blame on the millennials for wanting this change of menu and not being in favor of shared table seating in the diners. Amtrak will offer this new complimentary menu, but as of this writing it is not available to coach passengers, although it is supposed to be offered to coach in 2020. These are pre-packaged meals prepared off-site that would be heated if necessary and available to sleeping car passengers only. They arrive onboard in cellophane wrappers, plastic lids and aluminum covers, to be unwrapped and served on the accompanying reusuable trays. However, some passengers have noted that they received the meals still wrapped, emphasizing their frustration with the presentation. Gone are the traditional meals we enjoyed as we watched the rolling countryside from our dining car table's window; the Amtrak exclusives like railroad french toast, flat iron steaks, crab cakes, desserts, etc. We feel that if certain passengers would enjoy the new to go entree options, they should have that right. Equally so, if other passengers including myself and the supporters of this petition would rather sit in the dining car and order from the menu, a fresh cooked to order meal on plates with silverware and linen tablecloths and napkins. While some may wish to buy snacks or light food items from the Café car. All three options have their place on an overnight train or one of at least 500 miles. It should be noted that the Contemporary Dining menu meals appear to be unhealthy. For example, the Red Wine Braised Beef is 490 calories with 250 calories from fat, 28 grams total fat of which 13 grams is saturated fat, and a whopping 2340 grams of sodium which is 102% of one's daily recommended dose based on a 2000 calorie diet. Other entrees are equally high in sugar, fats, sodium or carbohydrates. Amtrak notes that sleeping car and coach passengers may continue to purchase snacks and food items from the Café car. Coach passengers would be able to purchase snacks and limited food items from the Café cars for dining or provide for their own meals onboard, or until such time coach is allowed to buy the new meals, and or if traditional dining is reinstated. At the very least, with the discontinuation of the traditional dining car service, coach passengers should be able to purchase the same flexible dining choices as the sleeping car passengers, and have the option to use the dining or lounge cars to eat, other than at their seat. Since the institution of the Enhanced Flexible Dining menu passengers have noted that the Café cars are running out of items mid-trip leaving few choices and hungry travelers. On October 01, 2019 a 100 year plus tradition of meals cooked onboard and served in the dining cars will end; the midwest and west coast trains are sure to follow, although Amtrak has stated not as of now. And so will national rail travel as we know it, unless we speak up and be heard. Photograph: National Railroad Passenger Corp. d/b/a Amtrak Note: Results of this survey and comments will be made available to multiple decision makers in Congress including Peter A. DeFazio, Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Sub-Committee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials of the U.S. House of Representatives. Petition to Presentation College Administration

Redo the subject groupings for lower 6 to allow for better selections and teachers.

The correct subject groupings for the former form 5 populous for their reentry into lower 6 is quite distasteful, and horrendous. Students are limited in what they can choose from both sides, including both business and science students. Selecting certain subjects also result in certain teachers the students would prefer to teach them unavailable for selection. As a result of this lacklustre horrendous listing, many if not up to 1/2 of the former form five population are enraged and seeking to attain higher level education elsewhere. It stands with this reason, that presentation college chaguanas administration should seek to reevaluate there position on the current offerings and revert it back to what previous years offered, allowed for better subject compatibility and a wider array of teachers to choose from for their education. Failure to do so will likely see low turn, enraged population and worse, students seeking education elsewhere.

    Petition to Tesco

Will Tesco add vegan, vegetarian and gluten free option selections to their web site !

While doing my last two weekly shops I have been presented with dead chicken in plastic wrapping. Now for vegans this is more than a turn off its either makes us want to vomit or extremely angry or both at the same time. Given the fact that this chick was probably fed on soy produced from land cleared in rain forests in Indonesia this does not go down to well when shopping.By simply having an option in the website user options for vegan, and vegetarian and gluten free, and no nuts it would make the shopping experience a lot more pleasant withoput the unpleasant supprises and also a lot more safer.
