Tell IKEA to Respect its Workers!

We love our POÄNG chairs and sensible shelving options, but not when they’re produced in dangerous, anti-union factories that exploit workers. Swedwood, a furniture manufacturer owned by IKEA, is mistreating its workers at a factory in Danville, VA. Workers there say they face health and safety violations and racial discrimination, but when workers tried to organize a union to address some of these issues, Swedwood hired Jackson Lewis, a union-busting law firm that has, "been retained to advise many employers who have succeeded in winning NLRB elections or in avoiding union elections altogether." Workers were forced to attend a meeting with management where they were strongly discouraged from joining a union. Representatives from the Machinists union, on the other hand, have been refused entry to the plant, so they can't even speak with the workers. IKEA's code of conduct specifically states that its suppliers shall not, "prevent workers from associating freely with any worker's association or group of their choosing, or from collective bargaining." Because IKEA owns this company outright, they need to step in and stop Swedwood from violating their own code of conduct. Please write to Ikea and urge them to allow workers to freely organize a union and to investigate safety and discrimination issues at this plant. Photo Credit: Håkan Dahlström

    Respect for SNA's

SNAs throughout Ireland want the Department of Education to address the following issues which are affecting SNAs on a day to day basis 1. The NCSE guidelines - 13 recommendations have been made by the National Council of Special Education (NCSE) after a review last year. There are many questions SNA's have in relation to these recommendations but unfortunately the Department have not yet met with Forsa to discuss these recommendations. A pilot scheme will begin in September before a roll out is introduced. These recommendations go against the SNA standard contract and surely discussion should be had before these recommendations are introduced throughout the country. Please find the link to the review and recommendations. https://ncse.ie/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/NCSE-PAP6-Comprehensive-Review-SNA-Scheme.pdf 2. Job Security - As you are aware SNA's have no job security, as they are hired if and when a child has specific care needs within the school. After one full school year SNA's, if made redundant are entitled to panel rights but in fact this Panel is not fit for purpose. More and more schools are ignoring the panel as a means of hiring SNA's and so SNA's with many years of experience are being made unemployed. This needs to be addressed and surely a panel, which is based on the Primary School teachers supplementary panel would be more beneficial to all involved. 3. 72 Hours - The 72 hours (formally 12 days) are a huge problem for SNA's throughout the country. The 72 hours are a bank of hours which may be used within schools to provide additional hours where SNA's can assist with SEN related work. It has been confirmed that these hours are not a target to me be met but are additional hours which can be used if necessary. These hours are consistently being misused. SNA's are either sitting in school with no work to do in order for these hours to be completely or are completely highly inappropriate tasks such as: Washing teachers cars, cleaning staff rooms, cleaning sheds, refilling toilet rolls throughout the schools, office administration, fundraising activities, homework clubs, breakfast clubs, doing July provision/state exams without additional pay, covering books, cleaning lockers.... The list goes on and on. Ideally we feel these hours should be abolished or at least reduced to the same as our colleagues the teachers. It is however, of the greatest urgency that a circular be sent to all schools in the country setting out exactly how these hours should be used and on what tasks. 4. Contractual Inequalities - SNA's know we are not teachers and would never wish to diminish their role in our schools. But there are in face several inequalities which SNA's feel is extremely unfair as we all work in the same schools with each other. SNA's are not entitled to breast feeding breaks, we are not entitled to a day off for our children's college graduation and we have different bereavement and health & safety leave. Surely as we all work together we should have the same entitlements in these cases. 5. Month of June - Another bone of contention with SNA's is the month of June. Secondary school SNA's are contracted to work the month of June, although these SNA's work more hours on a weekly basis. All SNA's are paid based on the standard SNA pay scale and so realistically these SNA's are working for less money. Again during this time SNAs are forced to to do tasks which are not their job. 6. Job Fragmentation - Over the past few years the Department of Education have issued statements saying that they are increasing the number of SNA's being employed. While this is in fact true, the number of SNA's who are having their hours decreased are increasing.

Petition to Ohio House of Representatives, Ryan Smith, Ohio STRS Board of Directors, Rick Carfagna

Respect Ohio's Retired Teachers, Restore Their Promised COLA

Teachers in Ohio were always promised a simple Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) upon retirement. It is only through a COLA that  retired teachers can keep up with inflation. Many of Ohio's teachers teach in rural areas and retire with very modest pensions. They rely heavily on their promised and earned COLA. The State Teacher Retirement System (STRS) and elected official have broken their promises to Ohio's retirees and have placed an unfair burden on Ohio's current teachers. Inflation is increasing, it is projected to increase to 5% for next year and then to 4% for the following three years. Even if the COLA is restored, teachers will lose 9% of their pension to inflation over the next 4 years. This is on top of the fact that the average retiree has now lost the equivalent of 8 years of promised COLA. Retirees are suffering.  ALERT:   If you are a friend of a teacher, a retired teacher or an active teacher please click this link for more updated information: https://www.strsohiowatchdogs.com/ The Ohio Legislature created this problem when they relinquished their control of the COLA to the STRS Board of Trustees. The Legislature gave the STRS Board of Trustees the authority to "adjust the COLA." The trustees however, eliminated the COLA. Taking away a promised benefit after teachers have retired is wrong and arguably in violation of Ohio law (see Article II, Section 28).   Active teachers are being hurt too. STRS receives 14% from every active teacher's paycheck, which is one of the highest teacher employee contribution in the nation. Additionally, STRS receives a 14% match from each and every teacher's employer; thereby receiving a whopping 28% in contributions from every teacher's salary. However active teachers will only receive 75 cents for every dollar they contribute when they retire. In 2013, at the request of STRS, legislators passed legislation that requires active teachers to work 5 additional years in order to receive a full pension. Ohio teachers will also have to be at least 60 years of age and work at least 35 years for a full pension. Many of Ohio's teachers will have to work 38-39 years to meet the requirements for a full pension.  So how is STRS management impacted?  It seems they are not.   STRS is doing so well that they seemingly can afford to provide numerous large annual performance bonuses of over $100,000 plus to many members of their investment staff.  Eight individuals receive bonuses over $250,000 dollars, one over $330,000.  Performance bonuses alone total over 7 million dollars. This is in addition to their six-figure salaries. One individual's performance bonus alone could pay the average annual COLA for 330 of Ohio's retirees.  If the STRS cannot grant Ohio's teachers a simple COLA upon retirement and active teachers a fair value for their contribution, then all STRS salaries should be frozen and all STRS bonuses should be suspended. Teachers and the public must demand that the Legislature and STRS come up with a plan to restore retirees COLA and make sure our active teachers don't work longer and pay more for less. TEACHERS will only support legislators and STRS board members who value the profession of teaching! Note: If you are an Ohio teacher, or retired teacher, these groups have shown their  support and contributed to the recent forensic audit: Ohio STRS Member Only Forum (found on Facebook), Ohio's Retired Teacher Association (ORTA), Ohio's American Association of University Professors, the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) and their affiliates and the STRS Ohio Watchdogs. In addition, many of Ohio's retiree chapters have shown support.  If eligible, please consider joining and supporting these organizations.

Time for £12 - Dignity and respect for care home workers

My name is Andrene Williams. I'm a proud Jamaican mother of 3 gorgeous children, Junior, Isaiah and Shinaya, and a proud and committed care worker at Sage Nursing home, Golders Green, London, where I've worked for 17 years. Throughout this pandemic us care workers have been called "key workers" and "heroes" but my employer - which includes a billionaire called Benzion Freshwater, only pays my colleagues and I between £8.72 and £9.60 per hour, and we don’t even get full pay sick pay.  Living in London with such low wages - on poverty wages - and such terrible conditions is impossible. My colleagues have had to come to work ill, others have had to come back early from operations or injuries because they can’t afford to pay rent and buy food on the measly sick pay allowance we get.  Putting a smile on the resident's face is what fills me as a person. When you know family members can't be there, but you are there and they trust you, you feel how important it is to do this job. However, that doesn’t mean we should not get a living wage or decent terms and conditions.  That’s why we have voted to strike for £12 per hour and equal sick pay and annual leave to people who work in the NHS. We may not be employees of the NHS but we do provide a national health service and shouldn't be treated any differently. When the pandemic hit things were tougher and scarier than I could ever imagine. My baby boy, Isaiah, was born three months early with a lung condition. So I had to think, do I stay home and protect my child or do I work? But I had bills to pay at the end of the month, and I knew my colleagues and my residents needed me. I had to take the risk and it was gut wrenchingly scary. Now we have said enough is enough. We want, need and deserve a living wage and sick pay. Please support us.

Please don't "chip in" after signing the petition if your intention is to contribute financially to this cause. Change.org uses those funds to promote the petition among other uses.Local consultation is vital to proper municipal planning. Residents always deserve to have a say in what’s happening in their community, but unfortunately that’s no longer the case throughout Ontario, with heritage buildings and environmentally protected lands threatened by Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Steve Clark.Premier Ford’s government is not considering any community feedback in his plan to bulldoze heritage properties in the West Don Lands area of Toronto. We fear this will repeat itself throughout Ontario. In fact, Premier Ford and Minister Clark not only didn’t consult the community, they didn’t even provide a courtesy notification to the local MPP or City Councillor. A troubling development, considering that Minister Clark has issued Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZOs) throughout Ontario, affecting various sites including conservation areas.Without any notification or announcement on Thursday, January 14, 2021, a demolition crew arrived at the Dominion Foundry Complex, located at 153 to 185 Eastern Avenue. Built in 1917 to produce railway equipment, the properties were added to Toronto’s heritage register in 2004 to preserve architectural and historical significance to life in the city during the WWI and post-war eras. Today, that heritage stands precariously threatened by Premier Ford’s bulldozers. We invite all Ontario residents opposing arbitrary planning decisions without community input to sign this petition. Today it’s Toronto’s heritage under threat, tomorrow it could be your community or conservation area. FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDRYNOTE: Donations here on change.org do not go to Friends of the Foundry. Petition to To the Mayor of Syros island

Because the cats deserve dignity and our respect!

PLEASE DO NOT "CHIP IN" ANY MONEY TO THIS SITE! WE ONLY WANT OUR PETITION TO REACH THOSE WHO HAVE A GENUINE WISH TO SUPPORT OUR CAT SANCTUARY PROJECT. Ελληνική μετάφραση παρακάτω! The GLPCR project has always been about change - the change in attitudes and ways we have about the natural worlds and in this instance the cats of Syros. For 11 years we have fed, spayed and neutered and given medical care to the stray cats of the local village, transforming a piece of wasteland into a small cat sanctuary now made famous internationally in the Netflix series ‘Cat People’ episode 5. Our posts and videos reach millions of people and today we have sadly had to announce to them that a local person has destroyed the field and the cats feeding stations so that he might make a profit in claiming the land for himself. We believe that thousands of followers who contribute the funding that allows our work to go on would want to see a different outcome. Today we went to our lawyer, to the police station and to the mayors office to try to get the government of Syros to take responsibility as the law dictates that they must. Please understand it only takes very few people to turn a magnificent opportunity into such mayhem. This is URGENT URGENT UGENT - please sign this petition and add your comments, expressing your SUPPORT and genuine appreciation of Syros as you have come to see it through the eyes of our work. At this moment in the mind of millions of people Syros can step into a special future and represent hope and integrity by granting this piece of land dedicated to the safety and welfare of the cats who also have a natural right to live on this island - or it can drift back into those times when these beautiful creatures - the cats of Greece, are poisoned and discarded as if they are vermin. The new Greece is really trying to move forward and is full of hope. Let’s support this wonderful island making a next step. It’s URGENT that we get this field NOW! See the full story on FB here: https://fb.watch/9tdBB3kfIn/ MPORTANT NOTE: When asked to chip in at the petition site the donation does NOT go towards our fundraiser but towards their advertising campaign! If you want to support our crowdfunding for a new place for the stray cats, please hop over to our GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/84fffbc8 ΣΑΣ ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛΟΥΜΕ ΜΗΝ ΣΤΕΛΝΕΤΕ ΧΡΗΜΑΤΑ ΜΕΣΩ ΑΥΤΟΥ ΤΟΥ SITE!
