It is clear to us now, as we enter June 2020, that the need for transparency far outweighs the privacy & cost concerns of body worn cameras (BWC) in the police force. The discussion should no longer be whether to implement, but how best to implement. There is currently no standard for body worn cameras and police in Canada. We believe mandatory body cameras should be worn by all on-duty police officers in all jurisdictions of Canada (as well as the United States of America, but we are Canadian and we must start the groundwork where we live).
The opposing argument - abolishing & defunding the police - is not opposing for us! We support the notion that people are not inherently criminal, and given the origins of policing, we support dismantling the police and re-allocating funds to alternate sectors. Our belief, however, is in alignment with Black Lives Matter co-founder Sandy Hudson in regards to defunding - create a new front-line emergency service where health experts, social workers and those trained to deal with mental health crisis, not police, are called. In addition, parring down the police to a tactical unit that responds to ongoing crime only.
Body Cameras worn by police (and cell phone footage captured by the public) has continually shown us the unbiased side of any story. The truthful side. The public outcry regarding the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd is largely due to their murders being captured on camera. Often, without video footage, the response is nominal; the life of the victim forgotten. But what about when there is footage, and the officer still walks? What about the fact that body cameras can be turned off, the fact that there are no policies protecting the footage, the fact that previous trials say violence won't decrease even if they're implemented?
We must address the legislations and policies that govern body cameras, and the police force itself:
- POLICE TRAINING We need to address: excessive force, misconduct, harassment- POLICE PUNISHMENT We need to address: harsher punishment and criminal charges for excessive force, misconduct, harassment- LESS FUNDING We need to address: excessive force shows money being used disproportionately on weapons and access/not training; police should not be handling: mental health issues/social services issues - $1 Billion Budget for 2020, but the people are not pleased with the services (in any other business, this warrants revisiting the business model)- BODY CAMS We need to address: on/off switches, controlling the cameras, footage access (a thought: lawyers and legal aid counsel on behalf of the public/a victim, should be the only ones accessing body cam data - not even other police/supervisors), very harsh punishment using footage to convict/or for tampering with hardware/footage- SMALLER POLICE FORCEWe need to address: reversing the inner workings of excessive crime control (like the 1994 crime bill) in Canada/US - reversing: 3 Strikes Mandate, number of officers per region, death penalty etc.
Punishment was once PUNITIVE, but must be restored to: REHABILITATIVE & PREVENTATIVE.
Need convincing?
Here are some POSITIVE effects of implementing mandatory body cameras: - Increase safety of the public and the police (#1 priority)- Transparency, accountability- Minimize police brutality/monitor heated situations- Lessen false accusations of misconduct- Enhanced public trust, improved police behaviour- Relatively unobtrusive- Useful prosecution evidence- Increase number of citations and arrests; reduced force (by the book)
What about some NEGATIVE effects of implementing mandatory body cams? And how might we overcome those challenges?- Officers still approach their job with natural instinct (so excessive force may still be used, however if an example is made of these officers, a precedent can be set)- The camera doesn't see everything the officer sees (of course)- The officer sees things the camera does not (of course)- You must know the context of the footage (of course)- Costs & privacy concerns- Data storage concerns
Our tax dollars pay for tear gas, riot gear and rebuilding economies when people react to unjust treatment. If we focus on the treatment of people, and create transparency where it pertains to the police, we will be ahead!

Many students have returned to China this school holiday to visit family and friends as January 25 is the Chinese New Year. They have been or will be returning to Sydney soon before school starts on January 28.
There is currently an outbreak of the very contagious coronavirus in China, and it has spread to Australia - 3 cases confirmed in NSW and 1 case confirmed in Victoria. This is a deadly virus, and there is no cure for it. The symptoms vary, and not all patients develop a fever. Some coronavirus carriers show no signs of illness. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3047636/doctors-warn-china-coronavirus-carriers-may-show-no-symptoms
For the safety of the wider community, I would like to ask the NSW government (Health and Education department) to enforce a strict restriction for all families who have recently returned from China to keep their sons/ daughter at home for 2 weeks before attending school, kindergarten and daycare. I am confident that if we work together, we can win this battle.

Our beautiful dog, Walter, was dragged away by local council authorities without telling us where they were taking him. It’s been more than 100 days and nobody has told us where our boy is or what’s going to happen to him next. I’m calling on the South Gippsland Council to follow a just and fair process for assessing dog attack claims.
The council authorities that took our dog away were rude and arrogant. Throughout the process, the emotional well-being of Walter was not even considered. The council is not replying to any enquiries I’m making. They have not told us where our boy is and we aren’t allowed to visit him - this is completely wrong and unfair.
All I know is that the council received a complaint against Walter by a guest of mine who he nipped after she slapped his face, on our property. A letter was sent to us informing us of the seizure but nobody is willing to talk to us about the case, or answer any questions. I’m against the way this case is being handled.
According to local laws, we should have received an authorized notice informing us about the fees and charges payable, but we’ve had absolutely no communication concerning this. I’m calling for a review of local government procedures to emphasize dog care when impounding pets and prioritizing communication with the owners.
Our poor baby doesn’t know what’s happening. We don’t know what’s happening. Please sign and share this petition to help us reunite with Walter.Read more

Petition to VTU Vice Chancellor, Vtu chancellor, Chief Minister of Karnataka
Dear sir,
We, the Final Year Engineering Students under VTU, request you to Cancel Only the Theory exams of Final year engineering Subjects. Our reasons are stated as follows,
1) Conducting exams in the latter stages of July which will also delay our results even further, will spoil our plans to pursue further studies from foreign universities. There is a good chance that most of us will have to Sacrifice, Compromise, or Delay our further studies by an entire Academic year.
2)There is no guarantee that students who have been placed will risk losing their job due to the constant delay in academic schedule and also no guarantee that companies would want to hire a large number of students if the schedule is delayed. It also puts in jeopardy for students who planned to work abroad. In short, we risk the cancellation of our commitments due to the Oddness and Delay of time.
3)VTU is home to a very large number of students from Other states and even international students from other countries.Organizing exams 2 weeks after the commencement of college is tedious because students will need time to organize their travel arrangements to Karnataka which is still unsure how it will plan out. Some students may even need more than 2 weeks to arrive at the respective places of their college. It will be unfair to those students to only spend so much time traveling and not have time to settle, let alone prepare for the exams or be mentally prepared to even face the exams.Keeping in mind Lockdown defers from state to state and in our case even the situation of other countries and international travel matters.
4)Also keeping in mind strict quarantine measures will be taken for these traveling students which can be very hectic, expensive, and affects our mental well being.
5)Students from other states who were stuck in Karnataka in PG's, Hostel's and Room's are under immense psychological stress and just want to go home to improve their mental health. It would be unfair to put them in another wave of stress by subjecting them to prepare for exams keeping in mind their current Mental, Physical and Financial condition.
COVID-19 IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM AS MUCH AS IT IS A MEDICAL PROBLEM.
6)Classes being organized online are not up to the mark and cannot replace the effectiveness of a physical class. Most of the Students could not gain access to these classes due to network problems. And many of those who could attend could not receive constant service of the internet and could not understand the concepts.
It takes us 2-3 months of continuous classes to be prepared for our examinations.
7)We can say for sure that our performance this semester will not be up to the mark (below average) as much as we can try, due to all the reasons mentioned above.
THE SOLUTION to our problems is to Cancel the Theory Subjects for Final Year students and to allot marks based on an "average of all our Previous Semesters" and "Internals of the final semester",and to provide us sufficient time to complete our Final year Projects which were put on hold due to the abrupt situation of the lockdown.
We face a much larger dilemma compared to other semesters. Please consider our request and recognize that our situation needs special attention and requires unprecedented decisions.
