Mariana Sifrit, an infant girl who contracted viral meningitis caused by HSV-1, was less than one week old when she passed away. This was caused by a deadly kiss. Her devastating story is not an isolated case.
The Herpes Simplex Virus, also known as HSV, is a viral infection that causes herpes. Neonatal herpes can occur when an infant is exposed to HSV in the genital tract during delivery. The current estimated rate of occurrence is approximately 1 in 3,200 deliveries. The risk for neonatal herpes is greatest when a mother acquires an HSV infection for the first time in late pregnancy.
Any delay in the identification of at risk pregnancies or in the diagnosis of neonatal HSV infection can have disastrous consequences and can lead to permanent disabilities or death.
We need your help to bring this important issue to the attention of our local, provincial and federal health ministers and representatives.
We want to see mandatory testing across Canada for all women that become pregnant, using the Western Blot Test, the most accurate form of testing that leads to less false positive results. We also want to see more funding made available for research to be done on this virus so that better treatment options become available for use.
Infants infected with disseminated herpes typically present symptoms very similar to those associated with a bacterial infection. Since a neonatal herpes infection can be seen up to four weeks after birth, clinicians caring for newborns in clinics, offices, and emergency rooms must be familiar with the clinical manifestations of this disease process.
Clinicians must be provided with the most up to date information and clinical education on the risk factors, clinical presentations and treatment options to treat this disease.
Finally we look to the health care system to educate the public on this disease. Many people are unaware they carry the virus because they show no signs or symptoms or they have been misdiagnosed by medical professionals, but this virus has can still be transmitted through asymptomatic shedding (no signs or symptoms). Although rare, a simple kiss, diaper change or breastfeeding from someone who is unaware or shows no signs of the virus can pass on the virus to their infant.
Please join us in preventing the loss of more innocent infants because of an avoidable and treatable virus. Thank you for signing and sharing our petition.

In Illinois, a police dog trainer is threatening that legalizing marijuana in the state will lead to the euthanization of police K9 dogs — and an Illinois Sheriff is agreeing with him. This is a horrible attempt to use animal cruelty to stop marijuana legalization. In March, voters in Cook County, Illinois where Chicago is located passed a measure in support of legalizing marijuana. Marijuana is now legal in nine states and Washington, D.C. and 61% of Americans now favor of legalization. For Illinois law enforcement to say that they will kill dogs they no longer need for smelling marijuana is awful. No other state has done this and it is completely cruel and unnecessary. They are using these dogs as a scare tactic for the public so they won’t have legal marijuana. Join in me in calling on Illinois Governor and lawmakers to stop any attempt to kill police K9 dogs. Two WWII-era explosives were identified in the waters around Molokini Crater on Maui.
These unexploded ordnances (UXOs), or military explosives that did not detonate as intended, must be removed for obvious threats to public safety. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources in conjunction with the Department of Health, the US Navy, and other agencies are currently evaluating ways of removing these UXOs. One proposed course of action is the controlled detonation of the UXOs in place. This would devastate local marine wildlife and disrupt the delicate ecosystems nearby. It’s important to note that no final decision regarding the detonation of these UXOs has been made at the time of this petition’s publishing.
To the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Department of Health, the U.S. Navy, and all other entities involved: we respectfully ask that you search for another solution to address these UXOs, one that ensures proper care of the explosives and the safety of all persons involved while also respecting the marine ecosystem in Molokini that is sure to be destroyed by a concentrated blast. Please explore every alternative, seek additional public and expert input, and continue to be transparent in your plans.

Statement regarding Navy’s planned bombing of Molokini in July
Environmentalists, Marine Conservation Experts and respected Dive Professionals join me in expressing outrage that the Navy is scheduled to detonate a piece of buried ordnance inside Molokini in the coming weeks. It is unacceptable that this has progressed this far without proper consultations and public input.
I beseech the Navy to use imagination, thought, care and consideration, and not take the easy way out and detonate this ordnance adjacent to some of the healthiest and most famed coral reef in the state, which has been growing for centuries, and in the vicinity of endangered species like Hawksbill Sea Turtles known to frequent the crater.
Molokini is a unique marine resource that has been in conservation since 1977 when the crater and the surrounding 77 acres of underwater terrain were declared a Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD). The fact that the Navy wants to come up with no solution to safely lift the bomb and tow it into deep water is patently unacceptable. In fact, I’ve been made aware that other solutions do exist which do not include intentional detonation.
With all the technology available to the United State Navy, I submit that an alternative to bombing Molokini – which is exactly what detonating the ordnance is – needs to be found. The damage that would be done would be irreparable.Read more

Departing PMs are normally allowed to nominate people for honours through a Resignation Honours List. However, this is a convention rather than a right.
