Imagine being with someone for more than 16 years, getting married and having children with them, you are suddenly told they are barred from this country for 10 years. My 12 year old twin boys will be adults and my 2 year old daughter will be a preteen. The person I have been with for more than half my life is now separated from not only me but our children and family we created.It’s easy for people to say ‘if they want to be here do it legally’. Well that’s exactly what happened to Jairo. He wanted to fix his mistakes from entering illegally in 2001 and 2004 so we applied and were approved for his i601A. Little did we know the ‘attorney’ we were working with would let him go to Mexico knowing he would receive an automatic 10 year bar. 10 years that have to be served outside of the United States. As US citizens (myself and children) now have to make the decision if we are going to put ourselves in danger to be with Jairo again. We’re being pushed out of where we are CITIZENS of. How do you choose the safety of your children or being with your husband? Jairo has absolutely no criminal record in Mexico OR the United States. He’s never been to jail, never had a DUI, never been involved in any type of criminal behavior at all. Yes, when he was 21 and 24 he crossed the boarder, but he was a different person 15+ years ago. He wasn’t a father or husband. He didn’t have a family he built. He was just someone who thought he was coming to have a better life, never in a million years did he know this would be his future.
Since Jairo has left he’s missed our 10 year wedding anniversary, his daughter turning 2, his boys 12th birthday, my only sisters wedding, family trips, dinners, and so much more! It’s been 6 months of being a single mother to 3 beautiful children that don’t deserve to be punished.
Help Jairo by bringing attention to the 10 year bar. Someone with absolutely no record shouldn’t be punished the same (OR WORSE) than people who have criminal records. There has to be a way all people aren’t grouped into one category. This is a flaw in our system. We need to stand up and fight for Jairo and spread the word this is not fair!
