Demand Social Media & Streaming Platforms Ban Animal Cruelty Content

(La traducción al español está disponible) We are requesting Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media/video streaming platforms take stronger action against animal cruelty. Too many posts depicting animal violence have been uploaded with no retribution. When a report is made, these platforms, time and time again, have said the post is within its regulations. It is inexplicable why images of abused and murdered animals are deemed appropriate when selfies of people with exotic animals are not. We ask that Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube etc: 1) Prevent the uploading of images glorifying the abuse, torture, and murder of animals as well as images promoting the hunting of animals for recreation by users who are not utilizing such images for activism or educational purposes. (Posts that are for the appropriate causes must not be banned: images depicting farm conditions, cross cultural events/incidents, and reposted images meant to spread awareness and catch offenders.) 2) Remove animal abuse content when reported - the “Animal Abuse” option under “Report” for ALL sites is INEFFECTIVE. The offending content remains despite numerous reports and complaints.    3) YouTube must add an "Animal Abuse" option under "Report" for ACCOUNTS not just videos.  4) A team of REAL people able to discern the in/appropriateness of reported images, who will follow the aforementioned guidelines faithfully, so as the removal of activist content/profiles will not transpire. 5) The reporting of suspected animal abuse to animal welfare organizations. 6) Assist animal welfare organizations in the investigation of animal cruelty.  Given the passing of the PACT Act, closer attention should be paid to social media & streaming sites’ inactiveness toward animal abuse content. If abusers are held accountable, so should the leaders of any social media site who do not proactively protect animals.  We are standing up for those who do not have a voice, and we are asking you to do the same. **Accomplishments:  In the original petition, we asked that Instagram add an "Animal Abuse" option under "Report," and they finally did this between April-May 2020. Special thanks to Simonne, Ashley, Katie Robertson*, & Kahtia

    Petition to Cartoon Network

Make Infinity Train a Full Show

"Infinity Train" is a proposed show created by Owen Dennis, a writer and storyboarder for the show "Regular Show". The pilot focuses on a girl named Tulip and a robot called One-One. The pilot is currently uploaded to Cartoon Network's YouTube channel. The show has quickly grown a fanbase, and many say the show has a lot of potential. People like the mystery of the universe the show is set in, and are asking Cartoon Network to make it into a full series.   People often criticize Cartoon Network for airing dumbed-down shows such as “Teen Titans Go!”, a spinoff of the show “Teen Titans”, and often feel that shows that are more plot diverse, or mature, such as Steven Universe and Adventure Time, are a better fit for the general culture of cartoons, and feel that “Infinity Train” could become a very popular cartoon. If Infinity Train became a series, many say it would have the potential to be one of the best cartoons ever aired on Cartoon Network, and I personally could not agree more. Many hope this cartoon will change how people see cartoons, and not think of them as shows "for kids".

    Change Ohatchee High School’s Mascot

The appropriation of the Native culture by people who are not native and do not exist in a tribe has overwhelmingly shown to offend Native American people for a multitude of reasons. "The headdress is reserved for our revered elders who, through their selflessness and leadership, have earned the right to wear one. It’s a spiritual garb, not just cultural; it's not merely an addition to one's attire. Wearing one, even an imitation headdress, belittles what our elders have spent a lifetime to earn." -- Simon Moya-Smith, citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation and journalist "Both feathers and face paint have purpose and often spiritual significance depending on tribal protocol and individual interpretation. In Native cultures, both feathers and face paint are earned through actions and deeds that bring honor to both tribes and nations. Individuals [outside the community] who wear feathers or face paint were not given the rights or permissions to wear them. This is analogous to casually wearing a purple heart or medal of honor that was not earned." -- Dennis Zotigh, Cultural Specialist, National Museum of the American Indian "[Wearing a headdress] could be similar to if the [shtreimel] became hip. Or the headdress that the pope wears -- if [kids] started wearing that, if that became a trend. I am sure any Catholic people might be disrespected. So for our people, it is the same way." -- Cliff Matias, Director of Redhawk Native American Arts CouncilNot only is the mascot problematic, but for decades the mascot has been more often than not, a Caucasian male or female of the student body and always somebody who is not in a tribe. They wear a full Native American headdress which is a sacred symbol of strength and bravery and have been primarily reserved for the tribes political and spiritual leaders.   The name 'Big red' originates from the pejorative terms 'R**s***' and 'Red Indian.' These terms have a well established history of being used contemptuously with negative connotation. Dictionary definitions are virtually unanimous that it is no longer acceptable to use and an “entirely benign” term. The Oxford American dictionary says, “r**s*** lost its neutral, accurate descriptive sense and became a term of disparagement.” It now calls it “dated” and “offensive.” Merriam Webster identified the term as “often contemptuous” as early as its 1898 Collegiate version. The etymology of the pejorative term is much more troubling. Newspapers dating back to 1863 show the use of the word as a slur to refer to those who are called to be killed for bounty. The fact remains that to many Native Americans, the term "r**s***" has long meant the act of our ancestor's scalps being collected for bounty. Kevin Gover, a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and director of the Institution's National Museum of the American Indian shared these words while discussing the use of the slur: "I'm really not that interested in where the word comes from. I know how it was used. And it's been used in a disparaging way for at least a couple of centuries. Up to and including the time I was growing up in Oklahoma." The usage of these terms and those that have derived from them as well as the appropriations of Native American culture have been proven to be harmful to Native American people who are subject to witnessing their communities appropriate, disrespect, and dehumanize their culture. The appropriation and characterization of their tribes has pushed stereotypical ideas and attitudes about Native people and have harmful effects on the self-esteem and self-identities of Native American youths. The American Psychological Association passed a resolution calling for the “immediate retirement” of Native American names and mascots in 2005. The American Sociological Association followed in 2007, saying that “social science scholarship has demonstrated that the continued use of Native American nicknames, logos and mascots in sport harm Native American people in psychological, educational, and social ways.”   The superintendent of Calhoun County Schools is Donald Turner, dturner@ccboe.us is his email. The principal of the high school is Bobby Tittle, btittle.oh@ccboe.us is his email. Louisiana Attorney General and US DOJ: Investigate brutal anti-gay assault on Andrew Sawyer at Shaw Group

While working at the Shaw Group in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I was sexually assaulted by four male co-workers who perceived that I was gay. But the District Attorney's office has refused to take the case. I believe this is because they don’t take male-on-male sexual assault seriously. Now, I’m calling for a state and federal investigation to hold my abusers accountable and prevent this from happening to anyone else. The abuse started almost immediately at Shaw Group. They started bullying me by calling me names like “Skittles” and “sweet cheeks” and poured water down my pants. But things escalated to physical abuse on multiple occasions. At one point, they tied me up with electrical tape and another time they sodomized me with a ballpoint pen. Working at Shaw was a great opportunity for me. I’m an orphan and I work hard to provide a better life for me and my younger brothers. I don’t have many options for work, so I put up with the abuse from my co-workers. I never thought getting this job that I would have to endure this. When I finally had enough of the abuse, I went to the police. The four men were charged, but the District Attorney refused to take the case because I was unable to appear before a Grand Jury in August. I was only given two days notice before the hearing and my request for a delay so I could speak with a rape therapist before having to speak publicly about what happened to me was denied. I’m calling on my Attorney General in Louisiana, Buddy Caldwell, and Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for DOJ Civil Rights Division, to investigate the case. I know they’ll find the truth. Talking about what happened to me isn’t easy. But I know that somewhere, someone else is going through the same thing.

Free the Banana: Say no to plastic packaging!

We at the Free the Banana movement want to ask the UK's major supermarkets to stop selling bananas in plastic packaging! We lie at a crossroads, where if we continue to use plastics to the degree we do, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050... Bananas do not belong in plastic bags! Their skins are their own natural wrappers, that protect the banana from damage; they come in bunches, so don't need a bag to aid their carrying or storage; and everyone can judge how ripe a banana is, so losing use-by dates would not be an issue. What's more, bananas sold in bags are more expensive per kilogram than loose ones! Need more convincing?  In the UK, every year we consume 5 billion bananas! That's roughly 10kg per person, or 20 bunches, or...1 billion bags of bananas! These plastic bags alone equate to just under 2,000 tonnes of plastic each year, or 165 full double-decker buses!  This must be stopped. Sign this petition and we can ask, as a nation, our supermarkets to make this simple and sustainable change to Free the Banana, and ditch pointless plastic packaging! Thank you,  Will

Bodies of dead dogs were left to rot - don't approve this puppy farm!

Earlier this year, we exposed a horrific illegally operating puppy factory in Inverell, NSW. There were bodies of dead dogs scattered around the property, with one of them being placed inside a dog food bag and left to rot, and all of the other dogs were living in appalling conditions. Read more here: http://bit.ly/1NAFYli Just recently the owners of the facility, which has until now been illegally operating for years, have applied for a permit to have 300 dogs – 280 females and 20 males. While we have been aware of this situation for the past few weeks, we have deliberately held off on posting due to an impending Council and RSPCA inspection – so as not to alert the puppy farmers. Unfortunately the local MP notified some members of the public and inadvertently the owners of the puppy factory were alerted, so they were aware of the inspection and had time to prepare. However, despite all of this, nothing at the facility has changed from when we first raided it. There is no plumbing or easily accessible water, the dogs are living in dirt pens in filth, and they are not complying with the code of practice. When one of the councilors asked how many dogs were on the puppy factory, the owners didn’t even know. On top of the application for a permit, the owners are appealing their $90,000 fine, which they incurred for breaches from our investigation and a subsequent RSPCA raid. We cannot let them get away with this! Please sign our petition asking the Mayor of Gwydir Shire Council to turn down the application.
