Nel 2011, in un report sulle api creato dalle Nazioni Unite, viene indicato che circa 70 delle 100 colture principali che forniscono il 90% del nutrimento mondiale sono basate sul lavoro delle api.Esistono diverse varietà di questo insetto ma hanno tutte uguale importanza non solo per la produzione di miele, ma anche per la riproduzione della vita degli ecosistemi naturali e addirittura per la sopravvivenza dell’uomo. Esse inoltre contribuiscono a produrre, tramite l’impollinazione, prodotti che l’uomo consuma abitualmente quali mele, pere, pomodori, zucchini e molto altro ancora. Le api non sono però gli unici insetti colpiti da questo pericolo di estinzione, si aggiungono anche farfalle e falene. La più grande minaccia per questi insetti è l’uomo a causa del suo massiccio utilizzo di insetticidi.
