Remove Amazon from Chicago Parks - Keep Public Spaces Community Focused

Amazon pickup lockers have been moving into our public parks, most recently Brands Park and Forest Glen Playlot. The Park District’s initial plan was to install 68 Amazon lockers throughout Chicago Parks– Updated plans show a 102 locker deal. The purpose of public parks is to provide free safe access to all community members. Businesses, especially large businesses like Amazon, should not be able to buy their way into community spaces. Due to public outcry, Amazon has removed two lockers, however, there are no plans to remove the existing half installed since December 2020. Installations are paused, but we want removal. We are calling on the Chicago Park District, Lori Lightfoot, and the City of Chicago to remove these lockers and keep our parks community spaces free from predatory businesses like Amazon.

Petition to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Alvin Botes

The South African government should be focused on hunger relief here and not in Cuba

A Coalition of Organisations involved in the daily fight against the growing hunger problem in South Africa has issued a statement demanding that government halts the donation of R50 million to Cuba and instead directs the funds towards an immediate, independent investigation into the root causes of, and solutions to, hunger in South Africa. The Coalition consists of National and Regional Hunger Relief, Humanitarian, Disaster Response, Food Rescue and Feeding Scheme NGOs. On February 2nd 2022, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes announced the donation to Cuba, saying that it was necessary, as US sanctions continue to pose a food security threat to the communist island. South Africa has a close relationship with Cuba due to the role it played in assisting liberation movements across the island. Despite the enormous effort and resources the Coalition of organisations collectively put into the daily battle against hunger, the ravages continue unabated. Each one of the organisations report exponentially increased need. All convey stories of desperation, impassioned pleas from a growing number of people desperately reaching out on their social media platforms, websites, and in person with stories of starving children, and sick and elderly without the means to feed themselves or their families. The Coalition believes that, against this backdrop, the donation of R50 million to a foreign country on the basis of international relations is a gross misallocation of funds, at best. These organisations have united to call upon government not just to halt the donation to Cuba, but more importantly to meet with them to discuss ways in which to collaboratively address the dire and growing problem, and to take collaborative action to end hunger in our own country. The coalition is of the firm and educated opinion that an end to hunger is possible – but only through the collaboration of government and non-government organisations uniting efforts, expertise and resources.

American Airlines Is focused on profits and not people

American Airlines has decided to put profits over the health and welfare of its customers. On July 1,2020, American Airlines will fill the seats of flyers to full capacity even though we are in the midst of a global pandemic. The American people deserve to be serviced by an organization that cares about the safety, health and welfare of its citizens. American Airlines was one of the many airlines we as the American people bailed out with our tax money. The union and administration are putting profits over health and we should come together and hold them responsible for their shameful act. Taxpayers who bail out organizations such as this should have a say in their practice during times such as these. We should say whether they can go to full capacity since we paid to keep them afloat. Covid-19 cases are increasing and by filling these seats they will add to the death toll America is seeing. It has been proven that being in a confined area for multiple hours has led to the continual spread of COVID-19. Corporations who commit this type of misdeed need to be held accountable. In the future, the taxpayers should not support government official who vote yes to support corporations like American Airlines who think of money before the lives of their customers.

Federal Party Leaders: Join an Election Debate that Speaks to Women

I make less money than the person who sits next to me for doing the same work, just because I’m a woman. Why does this happen? I can’t find affordable daycare for my family, so someone has to stay at home to look after the kids.  What if we both want to go back to work? It feels like I am seeing story after story on the news about Indigenous women disappearing and being murdered. What can be done to end the violence? What if we could work together to make sure these questions - and more - are put directly to our political leaders?  These issues impact families and communities. They matter to Canadians from across the country. And they are issues that politicians are not talking about! Imagine if before choosing our next government this October, we could make sure that every party leader spoke about issues affecting women and girls. We can make that happen! Together, we’re calling for an all party nationally broadcast leaders debate on issues that affect women and girls. Up For Debate is an alliance of women’s organizations, community groups and international organizations from across Canada. Over 130 groups have joined Up for Debate because we have one thing in common: we believe in equality between men and women, and we want every Canadian to know where our political leaders stand on gender equality. No matter who you vote for or what party you support, gender inequality impacts us all. It’s in every Canadian’s interest to know where the federal leaders stand on all kind of issues from discrimination to violence, leadership, employment, sexual harassment or child care. That’s why we’ve launched a petition calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and Bloc Quebecois leader Mario Beaulieu to participate in a nationally broadcast leader’s debate on issues affecting women and girls. Please sign, and spread the word so that all parties will speak to Canadians about women’s rights. Here’s who we are: www.upfordebate.ca/who-we-are And here’s our vision: www.upfordebate.ca/our-vision Help us make it happen! Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter. You can check out the last time federal leaders debated women’s issues here: 1984 Debate. Version française

Petition to The National Collegiate Athletic Association

Demand The N.C.A.A. adopt equitable hiring practices focused on BIPOC & women.

For far too long Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC) and women coaches have been denied their chance to advance their skills, experience, and education to the highest level of leadership in higher education by serving as head coaches and athletic directors throughout this country.  The N.C.A.A. inspires student athletes to reach to the highest levels, to overcome any obstacle, to train to be the best they can be, in their respective sports, and work to become champions on the field. They deserve to have coaches and athletic directors that look like them and inspire them. Off The field though the NCAA has failed to implement or create real equitable  policies, possibilities, and opportunities for BIPOC and women to rise to the highest level of leadership and become head coaches and athletic directors. They have dedicated their life to their sport, helped bring honor, pride, integrity, and in many cases earned millions of dollars for these universities. We demand The National Collegiate Athletic Association immediately create policy for all schools to implement hiring practices modeled after Oregon House Bill 3118, known as the “Oregon Rooney Rule.” HB 3118 requires "the interviewing of at least one qualified candidate of color when hiring for head coaches, athletic directors and assistant head coaches for all sports". Furthermore 2/3 of the finalists for hiring coaches in women’s sports must be female candidates (Judith Sweet Rule).
