Petition to Mark Zuckerburg
In the last few days it has been uncovered that the personal data of 50 million ordinary people on Facebook was used to sway the US elections in 2016. Cambridge Analytica’s use of this data without permission or knowledge has dominated the headlines. I’m a big fan of Facebook, I use it everyday to share information and connect with friends and family near and far. My closest friends even poke fun at me for ‘completing the Facebook game’, having maxed out the number of connections allowed! I do not doubt the huge value Facebook has given the world. That’s why I’m so worried - we ARE Facebook. And I’m not alone: The hashtag #deletefacebook has even trended on Twitter! Authorities in the United States and Europe have called for Mark Zuckerberg to face them; Cambridge Analytica’s CEO has been suspended; Facebook investors have sued the company, and; the platform has lost US$60bn in market value so far. Governments and the market has responded. How should we, as citizens, respond? As an avid user, my main question is: Can I still trust Facebook to protect my data? And as a citizen, my main question is: how has this data sharing impacted elections around the world? Therefore, this petition calls for two simple things: We call for Mark Zuckerberg to testify to the UK Parliament and US Congress to answer these urgent questions, and; We call for Facebook to investigate and list publicly any other violations of our data by other third parties. We want to give Mark Zuckerberg an opportunity to calm our nerves, and act upon Facebook’s community values of being open, inclusive, transparent, and trustworthy. The ball is now in his court. I hope you join me in signing the petition. Kind regards, Alvin CarpioCEO, The Fourth GroupRead more

Petition to Rio Tinto Board of Directors
On the eve of National Reconciliation Week, May 26 2020, it was revealed that Rio Tinto had blasted two caves at Juukan Gorge near Tom Price in the Pilbara region of Western Australia two days prior (Sunday May 24) to expand its iron ore mine. These caves were known to be a site of continual occupation for 46,000 years and sacred to the local Puutu Kunti Kurrama people. It was the only known inland site in the country to show signs of continual occupation through the last Ice Age. What’s more, they provided a 4000 year old genetic link to the the present day Traditional Owners (ref: Calla Wahlquist, Guardian Australia). Due to broken state cultural heritage laws, the blast was given ministerial consent in 2013 by the WA State Government. However one year after approval, artefacts of huge significance were discovered by archaeologists including 4000 year old plaited human hair which DNA testing showed belonged to ancestors of present day Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Traditional Owners. Sacred objects were discovered and the dig ascertained that the site was actually twice as old as previously thought. This discovery meant that Rio Tinto had a moral obligation to preserve the site. Instead, they proceeded with flagrant disregard for the site’s cultural heritage values. Without a deep commitment to Indigenous reconciliation in Australia, Rio Tinto has lost its social licence to operate here. We, the undersigned, put the Board and Executive Directors of Rio Tinto on notice to demonstrate how this act of cultural destruction will be redressed. We also call on the WA Government to strengthen the Aboriginal Heritage Act including an urgent review of Section 18 to ensure cultural heritage atrocities like this are never repeated.
