Obelisk Installation Halted/Meet with Neighbors

The Issue

(based on blog post by Suzanne L'Heureux at http://www.loakal.com

The Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District (TTBID) has designed and is in the process of implementing a huge gateway sign/sculpture for the Temescal Neighborhood.  Slated to be installed on the site of the drive-through coffee shop at 52nd and Shattuck, so as to be visible to those entering and exiting the freeway or driving under the overpass there, the sign will be a 20 foot obelisk in bright colors. There was no competetive process for selecting the artist and the community was not involved in any stage of the design process.

Please sign the petition if you think the planned, pictured obelisk is not the right fit for the Temescal neighborhood.

We believe:
this project will add visual clutter to an already crowded intersection
we don't need more things in that area that say "Temescal" on it (the neighborhood speaks for itself)
the design does not accurately reflect the neighborhood
the obelisk will clash with the beautiful, existing Temescal Flows Mural by Alan de Leon
there should have been an open, public community process for selecting an artist/design for such a large, identifying project for the neighborhood.

Instead of adding visual clutter, how about a magnificent tree as it would add beauty and oxygen which we desperately need.   Please join us in asking the TTBID to halt the implementation of this sculpture completely - or, at the very least to sit down with a group of qualified stakeholders to discuss how it might be edited to better integrate with the neighborhood.

The Decision Makers

Responded
A Community Meeting was held Aug 4 regarding its future. You’ll find said meeting’s minutes, as well as a more accurate image of the intended project on our website’s home page: www.temescaldistrict.org ================================================= Additional comments should be submitted to: info@temescaldistrict.org by Friday, September 12. After that, TTBID will make a final decision regarding the welcome sign, in conjunction with the property owner. You'll find: Figure 1 - The material with sample lettering and colors. It is made of wire mesh, not a solid material as appeared in the schematic design. The schematic design showed a solid tower while the actual sample indicates a more transparent, lighter structure. Figure 2 -The schematic design ================================================= The Temescal Obelisk project, is a public-private collaborative partnership, to enhance gateway identity signage and improve multi-modal connections to/from local streets and Hwy 24, as well as the heart of Temescal and employees of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
