We are asking the City of Oakland to help find the proper permitting to maintain a community supported/community funded Port-a-Potty at Driver Plaza for our COMMUNITY ELDERS.

The Issue

We need to honor and care for our community elders!  Driver Plaza is a historic triangular plaza on the border of North Oakland and South Berkeley that once housed a famous North Oakland Night Club known to locals as the "Triangle Club."  This spot is now a small public park and plaza, that serves as a rich cultural hotspot for our community elders.

The Plaza users have been under pressure in the last 4 years du to a surge in highend housing developmentment.  The Plaza is one of a few safe havens for our communtiy elders.

We want our elders to live a dignified life and so we all worked together to fund raise for a ADA Port-a-potty, so our elders had a place to relieve themselves in a dignified fashion.  The City of Oakland has said they plan to remove the Port-a-Potty this week, because there are no permits for the Port-a-potty.  Self Help is asking for the City to help find the appropriate permits to meet the needs of our community!

The Self-Help Hunger Program was started four years ago with a mission:

  1. To help the folks who were living on the streets,
  2. To provide a safe place to congregate,
  3. To share healthy and nutritious food for our community
  4. To provide a sense that the community cared

We believe that the positive energy, the drive and the divine inspirtaion we receive that is within us, lead us to pull together as a unified community of Self Help (Each one, Help One). Thus, we endeavor to provide any and all human services that an individual or family may need to, not merely survive, but to thrive.

All Power to the People,

Aunti Frances and the Self Help Hunger Program
