賛同してくださった皆様、夜分遅くに失礼いたします、えりかの母です。
先週（2月9日）、えりかと、同じクラスのお友達のみなもさんが2人で、31,343人の署名と要望書を、練馬区の前川燿男区長と堀和夫教育長にお渡ししました。大人数が集まった広い部屋の中、えりかとみなもさんが迷いなく準備をした言葉を読み上げて、要望を伝えました。前川区長が「私たちも庁舎内でプラスチックをなくそうと取り組んでいる。一緒に力を合わせてやっていけば大変大きな力になる。大変心強く思う」と言ってくださいました。堀教育長は、2人に給食用牛乳の業者選択の仕組みを解説し、「私たちもメーカーに何とかしてほしいとお願いはしている。すぐにはいかないが、プラスチックストローがなくなる方向にはなると思う」と説明しました。そんなに遠くはない将来に変化があり得るとのことでした。
えりかからのメッセージです
「区役所に、集めた署名を提出しに行くのはとても緊張しましたが、あんなにたくさんの人が応援してくれていると考えて、頑張ることができました。前川区長と堀教育長も同じようなことを考えていたから、うれしかったです。これで速くプラスチックストローがなくなってほしいです。私たちの将来を考えると、今みたいな自然が残るのかは心配ですから、大人に早く何とかしてほしいです。このキャンペーンでいろんな人が環境問題について考え始めてくれればうれしいです。皆様、サポートをありがとうございます！」

最後に、私個人から一言、補足させてください。
この場を借りて、えりかの担任の先生にお礼を申し上げたいです。えりかとクラスメイトがプラスチックゴミ問題について考え始めたところ、全力で解決策を考えることをサポートしてくださいました。そのお陰で、全学年での「マイコップ週間」という取組を実践することになりました。普段からいつも子どもたちの意見に耳を傾け、真剣に受け止めてくれています。その上、えりかたちにさまざまな社会問題を認識させ、子どもたちにも大人と同じように意見を述べたり、変化を起こしたりする権利があることを教えてくださっています。母親としてだけではなく、同じく教員としてもとてもありがたく思います。このような教育がきっと、自己決定ができ、心の広い次世代を育んでいくと思います。日本社会のサステナビリティを考えると、これより大事なことはないと感じます。先生の情熱的な貢献に、深く感謝しています。
また、このキャンペーンを終始サポートしてくださったchange.org Japanのチームには、感謝に堪えません！素晴らしい場の提供と暖かいフォロー、心より感謝申し上げます。
そして、賛同してくださった皆様にもお礼を申し上げたいです。プラスチックゴミ削減に繋がっていくのは、今の時点では祈るばかりですが、子どもたちのエンパワーメントには間違いなく繋がりました！ありがとうございます。

Thank you for supporting Erika‘s campaign against plastic straws in school lunches!
Last week, Erika and her friend and classmate Minamo handed the petition with 31,343 signatures to the Mayor of Nerima Ward, Tokyo. The Mayor, Akio Maekawa, and the Head of the Board of Education of Nerima Ward, Kazuo Hori, listened to their request and reasoning with sincere interest. They explained that Nerima Ward is also actively trying to reduce plastic waste. As part of this, they have already requested the milk supplier for Nerima Ward to change the milk packaging to a plastic free alternative. In other wards of Tokyo, suppliers have already changed to milk packs without straws, and they are hoping to be able also implement this in Nerima Ward soon.
Message from Erika
“My friend Minamo and I were very nervous to go to the ward office to submit the signatures and the petition, but then we thought of all the people who signed the petition. This helped us stay calm and explain to the mayor that we don’t want to use plastic straws in school anymore and why we think plastic needs to be reduced. We were happy because Mayor Maekawa and Hori-san of the Board of Education were thinking the same thing. I hope our action will eliminate plastic straws fast. When I think about our future, I worry about whether there will be any nature left as we know it now. This scares me and I hope that adults will do something about it as soon as possible. I hope this campaign will make people start to think more about environmental issues. Thank you so much for your support!”

Erika said she was happy about the reports, as this might make more people aware of the fact that we need to act to protect the environment.
Lastly, please allow me to add some words from me, personally.
In this campaign, my role was to support my daughter Erika. However, here, not only as a mother, but also as an educator and sociologist, I want to take the opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Erika’s teacher for supporting Erika and her class in thinking about possible solutions to a problem they identified. It is only thanks to him that they were able to implement the “my cup week” in their school grade. He always has an open ear and takes their ideas seriously. He makes them aware of different social problems and teaches them that they, as children, have just as much the right to state their opinion and initiate change as grown-ups have. In a country where children are often not taken seriously, I find this most refreshing and am deeply grateful for his passionate contribution to raising the self-directed and open-minded next generation that Japan so badly needs. Thank you, Sensei!
