11 March 2023:

Reminder: Consultation About Coercion Deadline 15 March

This is a reminder that the Consultation about Coercion below is due on 15 March.

As I mentioned before, I am a member of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA)’s Working Group on Implementing Alternatives to Coercion in Mental Health Care, as a Family Carer representative. That working group is conducting a consultation with people with lived experience of mental health conditions and their family & informal carers. I have been involved in designing this consultation, and would like to ask your help in encouraging people to participate.

The consultation will help determine how the WPA should support alternatives to coercion as a key component of improving mental health care. (We define coercion as formal detention, treatment without consent, seclusion or restraint).  People are welcome to participate:

· As someone with lived experience of a mental health condition;

· As a family member or informal carer of someone with a mental health condition; and/or

· On behalf of an organisation (including formal or informal groups, associations or networks) that represents people with lived experience and/or family & informal carers.

You can learn more about the consultation and participate by visiting: https://forms.gle/8BAUPVMeA5B5nzJs8

I’d appreciate if you could please share this consultation link with your networks to help us bring lived experience and family/carer voices into this important conversation. The consultation will remain open until March 15th, 2023.

Thanks in advance,

Martha Savage
