Hi all, we wanted to let you know that we now have 293 signatures on this petition. Thank you so much for your support!
Let's use this time to clear us some recent questions and/or concerns that have been expressed to us recently!
Starting off with the biggest and most obvious thing on our plate, let's address the rumor.
Recently, our group caught wind of a rumor about the petition. Obviously, we know the most about it, so we are addressing it immediately to ease your worries.
The rumor says that people are getting suspended for signing the "Your Name Matters" petition. That is false.
It is a persons constitutional right to petition. Our wonderful team of people working on this movement with us have done extensive research, and when petitioning as students, your school can ask you to stop, but they cannot make you. Additionally, if anybody was getting suspended- which they aren't -it would be myself and Alex. There is no logic in suspending over 200 students for expressing agreement with one another.
And in case that isn't enough, we would also like to express that multiple teachers have signed this petition, as well.
Now, onto the more tame questions.
Q: Will signing this petition get me removed from the 2022-2023 yearbook?
A: Nope! Signing this petition is just expressing your agreement with our cause. It will not effect you in any way shape or form other than getting emails! However, it will make a real impact and add to the numbers for us!
Q: What's the plan, though? How would this be organized?
A: Our goal is to have forms in the LHS and HSA offices for students to submit, including their legal name, preferred name, student signature, and a parent signature.
Obviously, this raises the issue, "what if a transgender student is still in the closet and wants to get their name changed in the yearbook?" Unfortunately, we really cannot accommodate to that safely. If that student were to get their name in the yearbook and the parents or a relative saw, it could put the student in danger. Safety should always come first, so unfortunately that just isn't an option.
If you have any more questions, feel free to find me on school grounds or email me at ch3rrysc0nes@gmail.com ! Thank you for your support, please keep sharing and spreading this petition! Hopefully our work will be worth it!
