Why this petition matters

Started by YorkU Undergrads for CUPE 3903

We, the undergraduate student body of York University, resolve to stand in solidarity with our mentors, our colleagues, and our friends by refusing to cross the picket line established by CUPE 3903 should academic activity resume amid the ongoing labour disruption.

Therefore, should classes be resumed while CUPE 3903 units 1 and 3 remain on legal strike, we hereby refuse to cross their picket line.

We will not be pitted against our educators or used as pawns to weaken their bargaining position.

We invoke our right to "immunity from penalty, to reasonable alternative access to materials covered in [our] absence, to reasonable extensions of deadlines and to such other remedy" as outlined in the York Senate Committee's own policy concerning “Fairness to Students” in the event of a strike.

Further, should the Senate decide to resume classes and offer alternatives to in-class education such as online lectures and assignments, we feel this will put undergraduate students who choose to invoke this right at an academic disadvantage.

We pay tuition with the expectation of a quality, in-class education. Should York resume classes, they will be forcing undergraduates to compromise their dignity by crossing CUPE3903 picket lines or their education by not doing so. This is a form of Bullying and it is unacceptable.

The only way to end the strike is to go back to the bargaining table in good faith. This is the only way to get students back into the classroom, and to ensure our teachers are being compensated and treated fairly.

We hope for a fair and timely resolution to this dispute, but refuse to compromise our education or the well-being of our educators.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
