YMCA Bay Area: Build Shih Yu Lang Central YMCA

YMCA Bay Area: Build Shih Yu Lang Central YMCA
The Issue
The Shih Yu Lang Central YMCA has served as a crossroads for people of all backgrounds, ages, orientations and abilities since it was established in the Tenderloin over 150 years ago. It has anchored world class fitness and wellness culture in the heart of San Francisco through wars, the HIV-AIDS epidemic and many waves of economic boom and bust, helping to make the Tenderloin more humane and livable. The Tenderloin is poorer today without its Y as both City/State workers and neighborhood residents all go without, the whole City is diminished.
When our 100-yr old building was sold in 2008 the branch membership was the largest in San Francisco, the most diverse and enduring. Even with so much less space our programs are still recognized for their excellence.
The Shih Yu Lang Central YMCA must be rebuilt as promised by YMCA Bay Area executive staff in 2008.
The people of the Tenderloin/Civic Center District of San Francisco deserve to have our world-class health and fitness community center restored.
We must not allow millions of dollars to be withdrawn from the community and not returned.
The legacy of service through the Shih Yu Lang Central YMCA must be respected.
With the land reserved and the money held in trust NOW is the time to keep the commitment!
