YG Entertainment and Blackpink (k-pop group) using desi culture for aesthetics
The Issue
On 26th of June, 2020 BlackPink a k-pop girl group had its comeback with the song 'How You Like That.' At the part where one of their member 'Lisa' was rapping they showed her sitting on the throne, while the statue of 'Ganesha' was lying on the floor. Ganesha the god of wisdom, intellect and new beginnings is one of the most important god in Hindu Mythology, and using him as a prop for the set aesthetics and keeping the statue on floor near leg while the artist was on the throne is highly disrespectful for our religion.
Also this is not the first time that the girl group has used desi culture for aesthetics, they have used bindis, matthapatti and bharatnatyam gestures before all for aesthetics and fun.
We want YG Entertainment and BlackPink to own up to their mistakes, acknowledge and apology with the promise to never do it again. We even expect a justification as to why and how the statue was used.
Indian culture is very rich and diverse and should not ne used only for the sake of aesthetics and show. We need to come together to protect out culture because if we dont speak now it will keep happening. We deserve the apology and justification.
