To urge the Wright State University Strategic Hiring Committee to change its decision on the elimination of the Assistant Director of the Outdoor Recreation Program.
Recently, the Strategic Hiring Committee voted to eliminate the position of Assistant Director of the Outdoor Recreation Program that will lead to the termination of the entire Outdoor Resource Center, indoor climbing wall, challenge course, and many programs including the Adventure Summit, Campus Bicycle Access Project, and the Freshman Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT). These programs are an instrumental part for many people’s educational experience at Wright State University. For many, it is an avenue where they can learn more about themselves through tests of physical endurance and unique experiences.
For employees of the Outdoor Resource Center, this is more than a regular workplace. It is a second home where they can grow together as young adults. Brooke Waterman, a junior biology student, had her career intentions affected by her participation in the Outdoor Resource Center. She wrote that, “[Her] time spent in the outdoors on ORC trips has influenced this decision to pursue a career in conservation and biology.” For freshmen, FOOT is a unique experience that provides the opportunity to meet new people coming to Wright State. When asked about FOOT, junior Erin Halloran describes it as an experience that “changed her life.” These few testimonies illustrate the extremely positive impact the Outdoor Resource Center has on the students of Wright State University. The decision to eliminate the Outdoor Resource Center will prove to be extremely detrimental to the entire campus community. Students, staff, and faculty all utilize the wonderful resources the Outdoor Resource Center has to offer.
In closing, we truly hope that the Strategic Planning Committee will reconsider its decision on the elimination of the Assistant Director of the Outdoor Recreation Program as it is extremely important to the success of students at Wright State University.
