Protect the Stellar Sea Lion

The stellar sea lion has faced the threat of endangerment since it was first listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1990. The western population in North America must answer to the destructive consequences of human and natural activities. Hunting and pollution pose the greatest threats to these aquatic mammals. Sea lions are becoming tangled in fishing gear and strangled by garbage debris. Oil spills and environmental contaminants like heavy metals, also threaten the habitats of the Stellar sea lion population. Other factors include introduced species, which carry diseases that can spread to sea lions. They are furthermore vulnerable to the effects of climate change on ocean currents, which impacts their fish prey abundance.

While efforts such as the 1970 Fisheries Act and The Oceans Act of 1996 have demonstrated efforts to secure the population of the stellar sea lion, numbers have continued to decrease since their enforcement. The western population is still declining rapidly in large areas of its range. Recent changes in vital rates in other areas are of high concern, and evidence as a whole indicates that there are multiple remaining threats to the stellar sea lion's existence.

YOU CAN BE PART OF THE CHANGE to restore their population in North America. Sign this petition to encourage organizations such as World Wildlife Fund and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to continue the fight to protect these animals.
