Today marks the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival. :(
Here are some horrifying facts about what happens before the dogs even get to Yulin:
- Puppies that are born on the truck are often thrown onto the freeway because they have no value.
- As the cages are stacked on each other, many dogs on the bottom have crushed spines due to the excessive weight on them.
- Many animals die from exhaustion, anxiety, lack of food and water, illness and disease, and heatstroke or hypothermia, during this horrific final journey.

However, we received a bit of good news to share. Based on the feedback from our team in Yulin, we believe this year's festival attendance has dwindled from the last few years. Based on some indications: the high hotel vacancy rate and fewer street stands.
Also, the dog meat price has gone up quite a bit this year. It means the supply is down and consumption will be less. Our team in Yulin told me that vendors in the market have told them that because of COVID-19 , fewer truck drivers wanted to drive long distances into different towns. Dog thieves didn't go out as often while the highway patrol is on high alert regarding the transportation of animals.
We know that one dog slaughtered is one too many. But, the old habit dies hard. We have to be patient and take any small victories as we move forward.
