After one month of soliciting public comments on whether "dogs should be taken out of the Chinese National Catalog of Animal Genetic Resources," on May 29, 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs officially announced the list of animals that are for eating and dog is not included.

When asked why dog meat is not in the catalog, the official replied: "our public opinion poll showed that people agreed that dogs should be not included in the Catalogue." He further stated that "Dogs have been domesticated for a long time and they have evolved from working animals to companion animals." He also added, "dog meat is not part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization statistic and international standards." He concluded that "eating habits should change along with the evolution of civilization,"
