The Council’s formal position in this matter is detailed below. ‘Wokingham Borough Council would like to make it clear that there is nothing illegal about selling dogs through pet shops, and it would be challengeable in a court of law to refuse a licence application on the basis that we have been lobbied by members of the public. Advice for people looking to buy a puppy should always be focussed on making sure they are entirely satisfied that the puppy is healthy and happy. There are a number of organisations and charities that assist people in making good decisions about buying a pet and we encourage anyone to carry out an appropriate amount of research before making such an important commitment.
