A new Illinois law now requires that an attorney be present when police question juveniles younger than 15.
House Democratic Leader Barbara Flynn Currie and other sponsors of the bill, tried to pass legislation requiring that all minors (17 and younger) have an attorney present during an interrogation, but a compromise was necessary to get the legislation passed. The legislation is not perfect, but it is a major improvement and a move in the right direction for Illinois. It is time for Wisconsin to take action as well.
