• Learn about a proposed golf course during this 2 mile hike in Kohler-Andrae State Park. Jim Buchholz, former park superintendent, will share his knowledge with us about the environmental impacts of this proposed development.   • We will start the outing by viewing a large wooden map of the state park and Kohler Dunes State Natural Area. Here we will discuss both Kohler’s road and maintenance area development plans for the state park property and the proposed golf course development on his own property. • Next we will hike the cordwalk trail  through the state natural area and then head over to the park office area.  This is where Kohler intends to build a large traffic round-about and have all his customers enter his golf course. • From the office we will hike part of the route Kohler intends to build his paved entrance roadway through the park’s sand dune area over to his proposed golf course. • We will also see the wooded sand dune area of the state park which Kohler intends to develop for his own use.  They want to cut down the trees and bulldoze the area flat to build two large shop facilities, parking lots and fence it all in with chain link fencing…..all on publicly-owned state park property. He is seeking the DNR’s approval through the State Natural Resource Board to alter the park’s master plan to allow him to take between 5 and 20 acres of state park land for this purpose. • Next we will hike down to the Lake Michigan beach area.  From there we will get an idea of what some of the property is like and what will be lost once 50+%  (Kohler’s own estimate) of the mature woodlands area cut down and bulldozed flat and rare interdunal wetlands are filled in to make way for the golf course, restaurant, roadways, golf cart trails, parking lots and related structures. • From the beach it’s a relatively short walk south to the nature center again.
