On 1/22/18, a decision was made by the board to close the JFK High School in Mound Bayou, Mississippi and bus JFK students to a school, Broadstreet High School in Shelby, MS. There was a vote of 3-2 by the board, 3 of those board members representing Shelby school district and 2 representing Mound Bayou. It appears that none of the citizens of Mound Bayou who have children that attend the school were aware that this decision was even on the table and therefore were not included or considered in this decision. We are perplexed at how the school with the best performance scores and that is more financially sound was not the school chosen to educate the children of Mound Bayou and Shelby. Shelby has poorer performance and struggles financially.  One concern is that many of the citizens of Mound Bayou will struggle with transportation to Shelby. The economic hardship this will cause on current citizens as well as the effect it will have on potential future citizens who will choose to not stay in the city due to having to bus their kids to a school outside of the city will be devastating. Although there are many concerns, the main concern is the lost of the legacy that John F. Kennedy holds especially in it's connection to the city of Mound Bayou and it's own rich history. Please consider and sign this petition to save our school.
