Save Century II

The Issue

PLEASE READ COMPLETELY BEFORE YOU SIGN!

Century II is an exceptional work of art we cannot replace with cheap, cookie-cutter development. Our beautiful skyline is unlike any other and these buildings are key to Wichita’s distinctive look. Razing Century II is comparable to destroying the Keeper of the Plains. Architecture is art just like painting and sculpture. Materials and design of this quality are not affordable today and the cost to taxpayers is prohibitive. Tourists and businesses are disinterested in towns with few outstanding features. Asbestos would be released into the air during demolition.

There is no need to tear down Century II. The former Gander Mountain building sits empty or the Brown Expo Hall could be altered. For less money and less heartache, we could build one big concert hall there to supplement what we already have in Century II and fully meet Wichita’s needs now an in the future.

There are two, separate petitions. There is a printed, hand-signed version in the works and this internet version which will accrue signatures much more quickly so that interest in saving Century II can be demonstrated right away. You may sign both. The hand-signed version may be necessary to create a ballot initiative. PLEASE READ THIS CLARIFICATION! The online petition is purely to rally support for this cause. Only the separate, hard copy, legal petition can be used for a ballot initiative and can only be signed by Wichitans who are registered to vote. This online petition can be signed by anyone.

This petition is collecting NO MONEY FOR THE BALLOT INITIATIVE IN WICHITA. No petitions on Change.org collect money for creators of petitions. The website asks signers to give money to boost the views of all petitions on the website. This is NOT money that goes to Save Century II. It is money that goes to Change.org to boost the petition. This IS worthwhile because the petition demonstrates that saving Century II is a popular movement and the list of signers will be shared with City Council in Wichita. However, I want to make it clear what the money is for, as Change.org does not.

An earlier photo was taken by Kristofor Sauer and still appears on some posts.
