Why Filipinos Leave: The Search for Better Jobs and Fair Wages
The Issue
The Philippines is a democratic country where people have the freedom to pursue opportunities that can improve their lives. However, many Filipinos continue to leave their homes and families to work abroad in search of better-paying jobs and a more secure future. Low wages, limited employment opportunities, inflation, and the rising cost of living have driven many skilled and hardworking Filipinos to seek employment overseas. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), approximately 2.19 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) were working abroad in 2024, reflecting the growing number of Filipinos who choose overseas employment to support their families.
While working abroad provides financial stability, it also comes with emotional and personal sacrifices. Many OFWs spend years away from their loved ones, missing important family milestones and facing the challenges of living in unfamiliar environments. Despite these hardships, they continue to work tirelessly because they believe that their sacrifices will provide better opportunities for their families and contribute to the country’s economy through remittances.
As a nation, we must advocate for policies that create more quality jobs, provide fair wages, strengthen workers’ rights, and improve economic opportunities within the Philippines. Every Filipino deserves the chance to build a successful life without being forced to leave their family behind. By promoting good governance and supporting local employment, we can create a future where working abroad becomes a choice rather than a necessity.
