Kelly Brown started this petition to Whole Foods and

Stop supporting the veal industry unintentionally - I am not a vegetarian so I did not know about the practice of using veal rennet in cheese making until recently. I, like many others, find the slaughtering of a new born calf for it's stomach enzymes so you can make cheese easier to be a barbaric, out-dated, unnecessary, and inhumane practice. There are easy alternatives to this method, including enzymes derived from vegetarian/microbial sources, or GMO animal rennet that does not require killing a calf. I noticed today that many cheeses are labeled with rennet/"enzymes" in the ingredients but it is not stated what kind in the vast majority of them. Consumers need to know if they are buying veal rennet, vegetarian/microbial rennet, or GMO rennet. Most people assume cheeses are vegetarian and are not educated on this topic because it's not clear in the labeling. In keeping with laws and policies regarding easliy understood ingredients labeling and animal welfare practices, I earnestly request transparency on these practices within the cheese/specialty foods sections of local grocers. Please sign and forward this petition requesting retailers clearly label the type of rennet used in their cheeses so consumers can begin to put their money where values are regarding cheese making and the veal industry. Additionally, please support cheese-makers who are using non-veal rennet, and clearly labeing their products, with your purchasing.
