Hello #WhatTheFork Supporters,
Thank you everyone so much for your amazing support. We had an great week in which we went from 13,000 to over 66,000 signatures and from over 50,000 to over 100,000 views! Please help us continue the momentum and share the petition at www.Change.org/WhatTheFork.
One thing I wanted to clear up with everyone since we've gotten a lot of comments and questions on it is donation. We are certainly in support of donating "ugly" produce and want to see those programs progress. The only problem is that grocers in the U.S control the produce market and without them selling "ugly" produce it makes it really tough for farmers to donate without great incentives and subsidies to donate (there isn't much out there right now). Farmers have a tough enough job as it is, barely make a decent living, and cannot afford to pick and give away all of the ugly produce in many cases (although farmers often donate some).
And, sadly, there are only a handful of ugly produce donation, or farm to food bank surplus recovery, programs in the U.S. Even the best program, the one we have in California, can only recover 5-10% of what's out there to recover in the state. So, for now, we need to focus on getting all large grocers (or at least a number of them) to sell ugly produce to open up the market for ugly produce everywhere.
Thanks again for your support and stay tuned to @UglyFruitAndVeg because we'll be going on national TV several times in the coming weeks. Please share the videos and inspire others to join this movement to end senseless produce waste and build a healthier food system!
