Who Gets to Keep Dreaming When Education Has a Price Tag?
The Issue
Education is often described as a pathway toward a better future. But for many students, reaching that future is not simply a matter of working hard or having the determination to succeed. The cost of tuition, transportation, school supplies, projects, and other educational expenses can become a serious barrier, especially for students from low-income families.
Scholarships are intended to help lessen that burden. They can give students the opportunity to continue their education when financial difficulties might otherwise stand in the way.
But here is the problem: when access to scholarships does not sufficiently consider financial need, the students who depend on financial assistance the most may still struggle to receive it.
A scholarship should not simply be an award for being academically excellent. For many students, it can be the difference between staying in school and having to stop because their families can no longer afford the expenses.
This does not mean that academic achievement should be ignored. Rather, scholarship programs should also recognize the financial circumstances of applicants and ensure that assistance reaches students who genuinely need it.
Because when financial aid is limited, how should we determine who needs it most?
We believe scholarship programs should place greater emphasis on financial need, household circumstances, educational expenses, and other relevant factors when evaluating applicants. Clear and transparent criteria can help make the process fairer and ensure that students facing greater financial barriers are not overlooked.
We call on government agencies and educational institutions to continuously review their scholarship programs and strengthen needs-based assessment. Scholarship opportunities should be accessible to students who face genuine financial barriers to pursuing their education.
We do not want a system where financial hardship becomes another reason for a student to give up on their education.
We want a system where a student's financial situation does not determine whether their potential gets the chance to grow.
Because education should create opportunities, not make them impossible to reach.
Recognize the need. Prioritize fair access. Give students a chance.
