Justice for Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia – Reform the Amber Alert System Now

Whitney Decker, a devoted mother from Washington, is living every parent’s worst nightmare. Her three beautiful daughters—Paityn (9), Evelyn (8), and Olivia (5)—were tragically taken from her by their father, Travis Decker, who failed to return them after a scheduled visitation. Despite Whitney’s desperate pleas to law enforcement, an Amber Alert was denied because officials determined the situation “didn’t meet the criteria.” Instead, a lesser-known Endangered Missing Persons Advisory was issued—too little, too late. Days later, all three girls were found dead at a remote campground. This devastating tragedy could have been prevented if the alert system was more responsive to credible parental threats and allowed quicker mobilization of public awareness.

What’s at stake is the safety and lives of countless children in custody-sharing arrangements across the country. Right now, the Amber Alert criteria exclude too many high-risk situations, especially involving non-stranger parental abductions, even when a history of abuse or red flags are present. If the rules remain unchanged, we risk allowing more children to fall through the cracks—children who could be saved if only their cases were treated with the urgency they deserve. We must not let another parent feel Whitney’s unimaginable pain. The system failed her family—and it can fail others too if we don’t act.

Now is the time to reform. We cannot wait for another preventable tragedy to wake us up. Amber Alerts must be revised to reflect today’s realities: custody battles can turn deadly, and abductions by parents can be just as dangerous as those by strangers. We demand that lawmakers and law enforcement agencies implement “Whitney’s Law”—an expanded Amber Alert protocol that empowers parents, protects vulnerable children, and ensures red flags are treated as warnings, not hindsight. These three girls deserved to be protected. Let their memory fuel a change that could save countless lives.
