"Non-Ukrainian, Still Human": A Call for Justice Amidst Indifference

As a student who was fortunate enough to escape Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, my heart bleeds for my Black and brown peers who now face imminent deportation from the Netherlands on March 4th, 2024. They sought the same safety as all who fled, yet instead of refuge, they've encountered a system that prioritizes white lives over others.

I stand in solidarity with these students. Our shared trauma from the war does not erase the stark reality: in the Netherlands, even the promise of humanitarian aid is tainted by white supremacy and racism. Their experiences expose how the global response to crises is often shaped by prejudice, not compassion.

The Netherlands, a nation often praised for its commitment to human rights, has failed these vulnerable individuals. The EU Temporary Protection Directive offers safeguards meant for exactly this situation, yet Dutch authorities willfully deny its protections to non-white refugees.

I urge the Netherlands to reverse this abhorrent policy that dehumanizes Black and brown lives. The international community must amplify this injustice and demand that all refugees, regardless of skin color, receive the safety and support they deserve.

We are not asking for special treatment. We deserve the same dignity and protection that would be automatically granted to any white refugee fleeing this war.
