Apr 21, 2017 — Hello lovely supporters!
I’m sure you’ve already all heard the excellent news that the government is backing and funding the suffrage statue in Parliament Square (with Millicent Fawcett now confirmed as the chosen figure), but I just wanted to email to thank you all so much for signing the petition. It made such a difference having such a huge number of us calling for this. You just can't easily dismiss nearly 100k people.
There is still work to do of course. We haven't had formal planning permission yet and I am in the process of working with the Mayor's office and government to deliver an education campaign to accompany the statue and ensure it's so much more than "just" a statue in central London.
I'm so excited about what we've achieved here. Until we decided to do something about it, there were eleven men and no women in Parliament Square and there was no prospect of change. But no longer.
This is huge. We have made an enduring impact on our built environment, in one of the most politically significant squares in the country. For as long as there are statues in Parliament Square, we have made sure that a young girl walking through it won't think politics isn't for her. Never think that signing a petition doesn't do anything: we are proof that it does.
Thanks again so much -- until next time I get angry about something!
