Update as of May 18:
Western University has now brought down the image of the two Hijabi women engaging in sexual activity from their post.
However, they have still not apologized and continue to target the Muslim community in their update.
They claim they want to "best support members of the Queer Muslim community, and those from all faiths and backgrounds within the 2SLGBTQ+ community". Yet, only mention the Muslim faith by name.
Western University continues to use the line "We also understand the image was upsetting for some members of the Muslim community." Attempting to shift blame away from themselves instead of taking responsibility for their disrespectful and wrongful portrayal of the Hijab.
Progress has been made but targeting the Islamic faith and lack of apology as if the institution committed no wrong action needs to be addressed. Western University continues to attempt to gaslight the Muslim Community.
The Petition continues to demand an official apology and acceptance of wrongdoing by Western University.
Alongside a promise to make efforts to ensure such an event does not reoccur.
Below is what their IG Post update reads:
"Our intent with the post was to demonstrate Western’s unwavering support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
We are fully committed to continuing to advocate for and acknowledge the voices of those within the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We also understand the image was upsetting for some members of the Muslim community.
We believe this presents an opportunity for genuine, thoughtful discussion about how we can best support members of the Queer Muslim community, and those from all faiths and backgrounds within the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
In order to promote that discussion, we have removed the image from the post to not distract from these important conversations."
