Great to have well over 10,000 supporters of our petition, but in truth it doesn’t seem to change minds of politicians, in particular the one who has to change his time or be removed. One of the key issues our campaign has is the way the greenway is being blocked from getting on the agenda at the Department of Transport. Unfortunately this is down to one man, and it is not actually the Minister of Transport Shane Ross. Minister Ross is heavily influenced by Galway East TD Sean Canney, his independent alliance colleague. Mr Canney is opposed to the greenway as he still rather naively believes the railway will be built sometime soon. It won’t. Mr Canney opposed the greenway when he was a councillor in Galway and he has taken this opposition into the Dail. It is Mr Canney who is insisting on yet another report into the Western Rail Corridor, despite the fact the numbers simply don’t stand up. It is Mr Canney who at every twist and turn is trying to stop the greenway from happening. At some point Mr. Canney will have to face his electorate in Galway East. It is at that point he will have to answer the question: Why have you blocked the greenway tourism initiative in East Galway? Only then, if this issue matters to you, and if you have a vote in Mr. Canney’s constituency of Galway East will you be able to do something about it. Last year at a Greenway rally in Tuam a speech from the platform said Galway East needs to say ABC. Anyone But Canney. Until he is gone and his influence on the Minister of Transport is removed, we won’t get our greenway. REMEMBER THE CALL: ANYONE BUT CANNEY.
