Free pads and tampons at WCU

The Issue

On Western Carolina University's campus, there are a total of three places to obtain pads and or tampons: the Bird building (Health Services) and the two P.O.D markets located at Brown and Courtyard. However, the pricing for these products in P.O.D markets is very expensive for the average buyer--college students. The pricing for a box of 18 tampons is $7.99 (tax not included) and for a box of 10 pads is $4.49 (tax not included).

According to WCU's demographics as of Fall 2018, out of 11,639 Graduate and Undergraduate students, 6,634 of those students are female, and 5,005 of those students are male. That is a little over 56% of our students are female, which means over 50% of our campus menstruates--not to mention our transgender and gender non-binary communities.

The Bird building is the only location on campus that provides pads and tampons for free; therefore, in order to improve the accessibility of these products on WCU's campus, this petition will serve as a call to action to provide pads and tampon in ALL high foot-traffic buildings--Courtyard dining, Brown Hall, and the A.K Hinds Center (UC).

Pads and tampons are not 'luxury items' they are necessities.

Sign this petition if you are in support of providing these products free of charge to students and fighting the stigma surrounding menstruation.
