Keep a Police Presence in Sutton Coldfield

We call on the Home Office to restore the cuts to the west midlands police budget, so as to allow a front-desk public Police presence to be retained in Sutton Coldfield Town Centre.
Cash-starved West Midlands Police are intending to close the Sutton Coldfield Police Station and sell off the site to raise over £2.5 million. The Police Station includes the only public-facing ‘walk-in’ front desk service currently run by the Police in Sutton Coldfield.
This urgent community-wide campaign is calling on local residents and community groups to call for a re-think over the removal of a public-facing front desk police presence in Sutton Coldfield.
The Proposal was discovered after following-up public comments made last week by West Midlands Chief Constable Dave Thompson relating to police station closures in Dudley and Walsall. It is understood that rising crime and increased costs mean West Midlands Police need £22 million next year just to standstill, in terms of existing services. This year’s council tax increase across the West Midlands raises £9.5 million, leaving a large shortfall of over £12 million that the force is having to find ways to cover. Currently the Sutton Coldfield Police Station costs over £260,000 a year to run, and there is outstanding building maintenance backlog of over £370,000.
