Over 200 West Hills community members gathered for a Town Hall meeting with the former Mayor and Catholic Charities back in August of 2022 as seen here; https://www.youtube.com/live/PeDBGwP-gIk?si=EH6GKvQ0zwaoj3Vf voicing concerns over lack of transparency, public comment, allocation of a City Council sponsored allocation of State and Federal funds for a congregate homeless shelter in West Hills - of the many public health and safety concerns given lack of neighborhood services, being located along the Sunset Highway in a remote area from public services, high potential for bringing problems into the neighborhood, above all, there was a major concern surrounding negative environmental impact in close proximity to the Finch Arboretum as well as surrounding (WUI) Wild Land Urban Interface… West Hills community members were ignored, and even called names for opposing the Catalyst Project.

A year later in 2023, West Hills Neighborhood faced a major emergency evacuation due to arson fires targeting the Catalyst Project by a homeless individual who was upset  with the City and largely the Catalyst Project in itself for not allowing her a housing opportunity at the facility - causing MILLIONS IN PROPERTY DAMAGES AND DNR AIR SUPPORT.

Sunset bridge had been restricted to two lanes stemming a failed safety inspection back in 2011, creating major delays and difficulties during the first tow of seven arson fires targeting West Hills in August of 2023 - to this day West Hills faces a 4-5yr shut down of the Sunset bridge causing a major concern for public health and safety during a natural disaster or emergency evacuation.

Please help share our petition with friend and community members to help address our public health and safety concerns surrounding the Sunset Bridge rehabilitation and closure, write letters to city Council members Citycouncil2@spokanecity.org urging them to better align with the City of Spokane’s Comprehensive Plan in regards to subarea study, inclusion, districting, zoning amendments regarding developments along a major corridor trough our neighborhood such as the Sunset Highway, as it has caused decades of economic downturn, blight, and loss of neighborhood services, businesses, and quality of life for community members!
