GISBORNE HERALD - A STRONG VOTE AGAINST DUAL NAME

Feb 9, 2018
Nearly three-quarters of the people who responded to the web poll question this week about giving Poverty Bay a dual name voted against such a move. The question was, “Do you support moving to a dual name for Gisborne’s coastal bay to Turanganui a Kiwa/Poverty Bay?” — a proposed change that is being promoted and consulted on by Gisborne District Council. NO 72% YES 25% Don't know 3%...... A few comments: * “Don’t agree. Spend money on roading instead.” * “We’re getting over-run by things that cost a fortune to do. Changing names is not easy, or cheap. Just to make people ‘feel good’.” * “Astonishing that the Mayor has so blatantly side-stepped fair consultation....." * “A referendum first please councillors!” * "just spend the effort and money on things that matter..." * "No wot a total waste of time and money for no gain." * "No yet another dumb idea from our Mayor" * "Why complicate things? Its a waste of time and money." * "Quite unnecessary, waste of time and money. Far too many important names being changed to Maori without asking the community." * "We have many Maori names already. Do not complicate matters with dual names." * "How about spending money on water, sewerage etc before..." * "how about changing the name of our Mayor for someone new!" * "There are more urgent needs for this district than a name change. That will not do anything towards getting basics such as roads, waste water, etc etc done. The council needs to get its priorities in order." * "This town needs to more forward not backwards" * "All cultures speak the universal language of English lets not complicate things." http://gisborneherald.co.nz/localnews/3221606-135/strong-vote-against-dual-name
