To ALL Florida residents and property and business owners: We need you to BE A HERO to Stop GMO Mosquitoes on Tuesday, August 18, during the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) 5:00PM board meeting. To everyone outside of Florida, please share this action with everyone you know in Florida.

The five board commissioners were set to vote YES each month since May. But each month, concerned citizens like you stepped up to attend monthly board meetings, call, and email to tell the commissioners that you DO NOT CONSENT to the experimental releases of Oxitec’s GMO mosquitoes. These actions have caused the board to delay their vote.

During the July board meeting, FKMCD board commissioner for District 4, Dr. Stan Zuba, recommended that the vote be delayed again by one month, until August 18th. He stated that he had been hearing concerns from his constituents, that moving forward with the GMO experiments during a pandemic is a bad idea. He also cited residents’ concerns that the Florida Keys tourism industry would be even more negatively affected by news of GMO mosquito experiments, on top of a pandemic.

Your actions are making a difference! Florida and the rest of America are depending on you to step up again on Tuesday. All five FKMCD board commissioners, even Dr. Zuba, have expressed that they want to vote YES to allow Oxitec to move forward with experimental releases of the GMO mosquitoes. Your voice has been the only thing standing in the way of a potential environmental and health disaster. Register to speak during Tuesday’s meeting to tell the commissioners NO TO GMO MOSQUITOES.

The August 18, 5:00PM board meeting will be live-streamed. But if you are shy about video, you do not have to turn on your cam. You can attend the meeting in audio-only mode or by phone.

You do not need to be a scientist or know everything about genetically engineered mosquitoes. Your statement can be as simple as, “My name is (first and last name). I live in (city, Florida). I do not consent to Oxitec’s GMO mosquito experiments. And I would like residents to have the opportunity to vote in a public referendum.” You could also mention the negative financial impacts on property values and tourism.

But again, you do not need to be an expert to speak. We just need you to voice your opposition and ask for a public referendum. That’s it!
